No change in condition of Tacoma panhandler shot by officer

A panhandler shot by a Tacoma police officer Saturday remained in critical condition Monday and had not yet been identified, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The man, a white male in his 30s, was taken to Tacoma General Hospital in critical condition after the shooting.

Tacoma officer who shot and critically injured panhandler released from hospital

A Tacoma police officer who shot and critically injured a panhandler during an altercation Saturday has been released from the hospital, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

Cool did not immediately have information Sunday about the condition of the man shot, who she said was treated at the hospital as “John Doe.”

Police said Saturday that the man was panhandling about 3:15 p.m. near East 28th Street and East Portland Avenue, when a Tacoma policewoman told him to move.

The man then attacked the officer by hitting and injuring her in the arm with a pipe-like object, Cool said.

Man fatally shot by Lakewood police in Tillicum was armed with cap gun, according to department

A man fatally shot by Lakewood police in Tillicum last week was armed with a “very realistic looking metal cap gun,” the department said Monday.

Officers said they had been looking for Patrick O’Meara, 28, for an outstanding felony warrant.

They got information that he was at a residence in the 14900 block of Washington Avenue Southwest in Tillicum, and when they arrived about 11:30 p.m. June 18, knocked on the door and identified themselves as “police.”

Armed man fatally shot by Lakewood police identified

A man who was fatally shot by Lakewood police in Tillicum Tuesday night has been identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office as 28-year-old Patrick O’Meara.

Police said they opened fire on the man when he refused their commands and made a move they found threatening.

O’Meara was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was ruled a homicide, and was caused by multiple gunshot wounds, the Medical Examiner’s Office said. Those officials did not have a city of residence listed for the man.

The shooting happened about 11:15 p.m. in the 14900 block of Washington Avenue Southwest.

Lakewood police identify officers involved in fatal shooting of suspected car thief

Lakewood police today identified two officers involved in the fatal shooting of a suspected car thief who the department says fired at police in Tacoma Dec. 9.

Officer Jon Waller and Officer Ryan Moody are both back to work after the incident. They were placed on administrative leave per procedure after the shooting.

The man died several days after the shooting.

Both have been with the department since 2006, and were lateral hires. Waller, 32, has been an officer eight and a half years, and Moody, 34) has been an officer for seven years and four months.

Tacoma officer fatally shoots woman who pointed gun at police, officials say

UPDATE as of 6:15 p.m. The deceased woman has been identified as Sophia Strickland, 22 of Tacoma, by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

INITIAL POST: A Tacoma officer shot and killed a 22-year-old woman Saturday night after she pointed a gun at and advanced toward the officer, according to police.

A woman called police at 9:47 p.m. and said her daughter had just fired off several rounds inside the house in the 3500 block of South Fawcett Avenue, and that she thought the daughter may have killed herself, according to police spokeswoman Loretta Cool.

Prosecutor: Tacoma officer justified in shooting teenager driving stolen car

A Tacoma police officer whose gunfire mortally wounded a teenager last year was justified in opening fire on the stolen car the young man was driving, authorities reported today.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said officer Brett Beall acted within the law when he opened fire on a car driven by Austin Joseph Welling on Nov. 27.

Welling, 18, was hit four times and died of his injuries Jan. 31.

“The officer acted within the law to protect himself when the suspect refused to surrender and backed the stolen car toward the officer,” Lindquist said in a news release.

Kent police officer shoots, wounds man

A Kent police officer shot and injured a 35-year-old Federal Way man during a confrontation today over a stolen car.

The man, who was shot once in each leg, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. He is expected to recover.
