Trooper shot in thigh when his weapon accidentally discharges during training, according to State Patrol

A trooper accidentally shot himself in the thigh while doing training exercises at the State Patrol Training Academy in Shelton today.

The 46-year-old man, who has worked for the State Patrol for 13 years, is in satisfactory condition at Mason General Hospital, State Patrol Public Information Officer Freddy Williams said.

The bullet entered the trooper’s thigh when he had an unintentional discharge about 3:45 p.m., Williams said.

No one else was injured.

The trooper works in the commercial vehicle division out of Poulsbo, Williams said.

The quarterly firearm training exercises are required for all troopers, Williams said.

Pit bull charges officers, shot dead by Tacoma police

Officers responded to South Mason Loop Road tonight for a report of domestic violence and shots fired, according to Tacoma police.

When they arrived, a pit bull was at the residence.

Police told the people at the scene to keep the dog under control and contained, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The dog broke free and charged toward officers, including a K-9 officer and his dog, Fulghum said, at which point police shot the charging animal and it died.

The use of force will be reviewed by supervisors, per procedure, Fulghum said.
