Routine traffic stop in Yelm turns up stolen property

A Washington State Patrol trooper found more than just a driver without a seat belt on during a traffic stop Saturday afternoon in Yelm.

The State Patrol reported that a trooper had pulled over a car for a seat belt violation in Yelm at 1:11 p.m. “While approaching the vehicle the trooper noticed several steel grates and pieces of metal in the back seat and requested a Yelm officer to assist,” a news release stated.

Thieves steal connections use to fight fires in Pierce County

The Pierce County Fire Prevention Bureau has found that several fire department connections have been stolen from the outside of businesses around the county.

Investigators suspect the stolen connections are being resold at local recycling centers.

“These thefts are happening throughout the region – we’ve been told of missing fire department connections in south King County and in Kitsap County,” said Tom Poste, Pierce County fire marshal, in a press release. “There have been at least a half a dozen stolen from locations in Pierce County.”

The connections are typically found next to or on the outside of business buildings.

Lakewood police investigate scrap metal recycler

The Lakewood Police Department is investigating a scrap metal shop after finding stolen items inside during a search of the business earlier this month.

Officers served a search warrant on WOTC Scrap Metal Repackaging Inc. on Feb. 13. They found stolen power transfer devices and cables that were still packaged for shipping, according to a press release. Investigators also found other items that WOTC employees had taken in for scrap but which did not appear to be scrap.

So far, no arrests have been made.

A new low: Metal thieves now swiping Tacoma’s storm drain covers

Increasingly brazen metal thieves have a new favorite target in Tacoma: They are swiping storm drain grates. The city’s reporting they’ve made off with at least 15 in the last 24 hours. They are asking people to report missing grates, which leave an open hole that poses a threat to bicycles and vehicles. If you see someone walking around with a heavy metal grate, call the cops.

Reward offered in theft of scrap metal from Bonneville Power substation in Pierce County

Pierce County law enforcement officials and the Bonneville Power Administration are investigating the recent theft of 30 to 60 pounds of aluminum scrap metal from a substation in east Pierce County.

The thieves broke into the Bonneville Power Administration substation at 4350 180th St. E. sometime between Sept. 23-27, the utility reported today. They cut several locks to get into a gated parking area and took the metal stored there.
