UPDATED: Lakewood police shoot, critically wound armed hostage-taker at credit union

Two police officers shot and seriously wounded a Tacoma man after he held a dozen people hostage inside a Lakewood credit union Saturday, then tried to flee while holding his estranged wife at gunpoint.

The suspect — a 48-year-old Tacoma man whom police did not name — was taken to Tacoma General Hospital in critical condition following the shooting, Lakewood Police Lt. Jeff Alwine said.

Alwine did not readily know the man’s condition late Saturday.  No one else was harmed in the incident, he said.

The shooting happened about 12:40 p.m. at the Washington State Employees Credit Union,  9540 Bridgeport Way Southwest.

UPDATED: Lakewood police responding to armed man barricaded in trailer park

UPDATE: The suspect is in custody. No officers were injured, Lawler said.

INITIAL POST: An armed man is barricaded in a trailer park in the 3200 block of 96th Street South, according to Lakewood Police.

He is wanted for Domestic Violence Assault 1 and Domestic Violence Assault 2, and reportedly has weapons, Lakewood Police Lt. Chris Lawler said. He does not have any hostages, Lawler said.

Police are preparing to communicate with him.

Prank leads Clover Park Technical College to notify students of possible armed man on campus

What turned out to be a prank  led Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood to send alerts to its campus today about a possible armed man at the school, spokeswoman Amy Goings said.

The college contacted Lakewood Police after a woman called the school about 3 p.m. to report that she had been assaulted by someone on the campus who had a gun, Goings said.

Alerts sent included a description of the supposed attacker, and a friend told him that campus security was looking for him, Goings said.

Raccoons attack woman walking with dog by Ft. Steilacoom Park

A woman was attacked by a pack of raccoons near Ft. Steilacoom Park Monday afternoon, Lakewood police said.

Michaela Lee, 28, was walking home with her leashed dog after jogging through the park about 1:30 p.m., when the raccoons attacked, her boyfriend Shane Bennett said.

Her dog, Maddison, ran away to chase two raccoons up a tree as she was leaving the park on a trail, said Lakewood police spokesman Chris Lawler. Lee went to get the dog, at which point more raccoons came out of a bush and chased her as she ran away.

Special halftime event at tonight’s Lakewood police, fire basketball game

Tonight’s charity basketball game featuring Lakewood police officers and firefighters will have a special halftime event.

Lakewood Assistant Police Chief Mike Zaro will have his head shaved in support of Lakewood Police Chief Bret Farrar. Farrar and his wife are both battling cancer. Farrar started chemotherapy last month and recently trimmed off his hair.

The sixth annual Helmets vs. Shields basketball game tips off at 6 p.m. at Pierce College. Tickets are $5 and available at the door.  Children age 5 and under are free.

UPDATED: Lakewood officer, suspect injured after early morning pursuit

A Lakewood officer and a suspect were injured early today after a pursuit ended with the officer crashing and the suspect being physically taken into custody on a South End Tacoma street.

The officer was treated and released from a local hospital, Lakewood police Lt. Heidi Hoffman said.

“He’s home,” she said shortly before 8 a.m.

The suspect remains hospital for his injuries. His injuries were not immediately known this morning. Once he’s released, he’ll be booked into Pierce County Jail in connection with the early-morning chase.

Lakewood Police Chief Bret Farrar now his own fan page on Facebook.

The “Fans of Chief Bret Farrar” appears to have been created Tuesday and can be found here.

“Through the last four and a half weeks Chief Farrar has been a rock! His ability to drive forward through our recent events is inspiring. He handled the events, the media, and the pressure with grace and without missing a beat,” the page states.

The fans page has 355 friends, many of whom are law enforcement officers.
