UPDATE: Crews performing CPR on kayaker pulled from water off McNeil Island

UPDATE: The kayaker has died. He is a 29-year-old from Lakebay.

Monday night post: A kayaker is in grave condition tonight after his boat overturned and crews pulled him from the water between the Key Peninsula and McNeil Island, according to Key Peninsula Fire.

Two men in their late 20s were kayaking in the area known as Pitt Passage when their boat overturned, fire chief Tom Lique said.

UPDATED: Key Peninsula battalion chief, two others injured in overnight crash

UPDATED at 10:34 a.m.

A Key Peninsula Fire battalion chief and two others were injured overnight in a crash on the Key Peninsula Highway.

All three were taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma for treatment. The battalion chief had possible rib fractures and other chest injuries, Assistant Fire Chief Guy Allen said. The condition of the other two was not known.

The battalion chief was on duty and had responded to help with a medical aid call shortly before midnight Monday, Allen said.

Second Key Peninsula firefighter fired over Wenatchee conference incident

A Key Peninsula Fire battalion chief has been fired after an incident this summer at an annual conference in Wenatchee during which an underage volunteer allegedly got drunk and flooded a hotel bathroom.

The Board of Fire Commissioners voted unanimously to terminate battalion chief Robert Bosch on Tuesday night, according to a press release issued late Wednesday. Bosch had been with the Key Peninsula Fire Department for 20 years.

ALL CLEAR: Crash blocks lane of SR 302 on Key Peninsula

A multiple-vehicle crash is blocking the eastbound lane of state Route 302 at Emerald Drive on the Key Peninsula, the state DOT reports.

The crash was reported just after 10 a.m. Troopers were on the scene. Traffic is alternating to get past the crash.

UPDATE: The crash has been cleared and the eastbound lane reopened to traffic.

UPDATED: Authorities find man and boy after kidnapping in Key Peninsula subdivision

A tense situation on the Key Peninsula ended this afternoon when Pierce County sheriff’s deputies located a kidnapped 11-month-old boy and, a short time later, arrested the boy’s father in the woods off the Lake Holiday subdivision.

The boy appeared uninjured but was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

A Puyallup K-9 team found the 23-year-old father, identified as Justin Smith, in the woods inside the subdivision. The Marine was taken into custody for questioning.

He was later put into a Medic One ambulance for treatment of wounds from the police
