Firefighters looking for cause of Kent house fire

Kent firefighters doused a fire Monday night at a two-story home and were searching for what sparked the blaze.

Crews were called to the home in the 26100 block of 114th Avenue Southeast just after 10:20 p.m. They found smoke and flames coming from the second floor.

The owner told firefighters no one had been staying at the home for about a month, the fire department reported.

Firefighters found no one inside. No injuries were reported.

The activity closed the Kent Kangley Road in both directions for about two hours.


UPDATE: Kent man arrested for crash that killed two

UPDATE: Kent police said they have arrested a 31-year-old man who was allegedly under the influence of drugs when he collided with another vehicle Tuesday night. The crash killed two people from Des Moines.

The man, who was driving an SUV, was booked on two counts of vehicle homicide, giving false information to police, driving with a suspended license and other unnamed charges. Bail was set at $1 million.

Kent police arrest four in early morning wire theft

Kent police have arrested four adults on suspicion of stealing a 4-foot tall spool of industrial wire from a business in the northern part of the city, the department reported today.

A passerby called Kent police about 4 a.m. today and reported that four people had just loaded the spool in the back of a truck. The four then split up and left in two vehicles, police reported. The business was closed at the time.

The caller followed the truck. Kent officers found of the suspect vehicles in the area and detained two women, the department reported.

Man killed by Kent police Wednesday afternoon identified

The man who was shot and killed by Kent police Wednesday afternoon after a two-hour standoff at a water tank has been identified.

Mayceo O. Devangari, 40, died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the King County Medical Examiner.

Officers had been searching early Wednesday for Devangari in response to a complaint that he had caused serious facial injuries to a girlfriend during a fight, according to a police news release. Devangari fled from police in his car, crashed, abandoned the vehicle and climbed a four-story water tank on the 23800 block of 98th Avenue S.

Kent police shoot and kill 42-year-old man after two-hour standoff

Kent police officers shot and killed a 42-year-old man Wednesday afternoon after a two-hour standoff at a city water tank.

The incident took place in the 23800 block of 98th Avenue S, according to a press release, which gave the following account:

Officers had spent early Wednesday searching for the Kent man, who was suspected of causing serious facial injuries to a girlfriend during a fight. Police found the man at the victim’s residence, but he fled on foot.

Kent man arrested in 1993 slaying of two sailors

A Kent man wanted in connection with the 1993 execution-style slaying of two Navy sailors in southern California was arrested today as he headed to work.

The 34-year-old man, who lived with his family and worked in Kent, was taken into custody without incident, the Kent Police Department reported.

Work by the San Diego Police Department’s cold case squad and Kent police detectives led to today’s arrest. San Diego police reopened their slaying of two sailors and identified the Kent man as a suspect, Kent police reported.

Kent police captain gets Montana police chief job

The Kent Police Department made this announcement this afternoon:

The City of Bozeman, MT today announced the appointment of Kent P.D. Captain Ron Price as their new Chief of Police.  Bozeman City Administrator Chris Kukulski cited Price’s “uncompromising ethical standards” in the announcement.

Ron Price has been with the Kent Police Department since 1977, serving in a variety of capacities, including K-9 handler, all levels of supervision, and most recently as Captain of the Patrol Division.  Capt. Price also previously served as Commander of the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy.

Kent police need help identifying car wash thief

Kent Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman captured on video last month when she broke into a vending machine at a car wash.

The night-time break-in happened at the Brown Bear Car Wash in downtown Kent on April 3. Video surveillance shows the woman prying open a coin-operated vending machine and change from the cash box.

Kent police have been investigating a series of similar crimes, and the same suspect may be involved in other coin thefts from businesses in the South Sound, Sgt. Pat Lowery said.
