Gunman who killed Tacoma teacher committed suicide, office rules

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled that the gunman who killed a Tacoma special education teacher in February committed suicide.

The Medical Examiner’s Office had been waiting for the results of forensic tests before ruling on Jed Waits’ manner of death. Waits, who died of a gunshot wound to the head, had been shot twice by a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy about 20 minutes after he killed Jennifer Paulson, 30, as she walked to Birney Elementary School on Feb. 26.

Moment of Blessing at Frederickson day care

Local pastors conducted a spiritual cleansing ceremony Thursday evening at a Frederickson day care center, where a man who gunned down a Tacoma teacher died last week.

The Moment of Blessing ceremony was held 6 p.m. at the parking lot of Discovery Station Child Care, 16001 56th Ave. Court E. About thirty staff workers, parents and children huddled in a tight circle, so they could hear one another’s prayers above the roar of traffic.

Blessing ceremony tonight at Frederickson-area day care

Members of Associated Ministries will perform a brief ceremony this evening at a day care center near Frederickson where a man accused of gunning down a Tacoma teacher died.

The Moment of Blessing ceremony at Discovery Station Child Care, 16001 56th Ave. Court E., begins at 6 p.m. The site will be marked with bamboo poles laced with red and purple ribbons bearing the names of those killed in deadly violence in Pierce County.

Deputy involved in shooting with Tacoma homicide suspect identified

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department has released the name of the deputy involved in a shooting Friday morning.

Deputy Eric Honeycutt, 37, shot Jed R. Waits about 20 minutes after Waits fatally shot Jennifer Paulson, a special education teacher, outside Birney Elementary School in Tacoma. Waits, who also fired one round, died at the scene of his confrontation with Honeycutt.

Honeycutt, who has been with the Sheriff’s Department for 11 years, was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure. He’s expected to return to work Tuesday, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Birney Elementary to remain closed Tuesday

Tacoma school officials have decided to keep Birney Elementary School closed until Wednesday after one of its teachers was killed Friday.

Initially, the school was scheduled to reopen Tuesday. However, officials have since decided to keep the building closed so students, families and staff members can attend the memorial service for Jennifer Paulson.

Paulson, a beloved 30-year-old special education teacher, was gunned down outside the school on her way to work Friday morning. The gunman, who’d been stalking her for years, was fatally shot during a confrontation about 20 minutes later with a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy.

Reminder: Blessing ceremony today for slain Tacoma teacher

Local clergy will gather this evening at Birney Elementary School for a brief, spiritual ceremony to cleanse the place where Jennifer Paulson was killed last week.

The Moment of Blessing ceremony for the 30-year-old special education teacher begins at 5 p.m. at the school, 1202 S. 76th St.

Paulson was fatally shot outside the school just after 7:30 a.m. Friday. The gunman was killed about 20 minutes later after a confrontation with a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy.
