Bail set at $100,000 for driver in fatal I-5 crash

A Renton man being investigated for vehicular homicide after a fatal three-vehicle crash that shut down southbound Interstate 5 in Federal Way on Sunday was in court today.

King County Superior Court set bail at $100,000 for Stephen Palmer, 21.

Palmer was driving a vehicle involved in a crash that sent a double-tanker truck off the roadway and into the freeway sound wall. The truck caught fire, and the 68-year-old driver, Joseph Bartkowski of Sumner, died in the crash.

Prosecutors have until Nov. 6 to decide whether to charge Palmer, who was arrested Sunday for investigation of vehicular homicide.

Fife man killed in Seattle crash

A 23-year-old man from Fife died after he was ejected from his  motorcycle in Seattle Monday, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Clinton Siegmann was driving just after 11 p.m. on the ramp from Mercer Street to southbound Interstate 5, when the vehicle lost control and both he and his 24-year-old female passenger were ejected, the State Patrol said.

The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center for her injuries.

The  cause of the crash is unknown, according to the State Patrol.

Both the driver and passenger were wearing helmets, troopers said.

CLEARED: Northbound I-5 crash by Puyallup River Bridge causing 5-mile backup

UPDATE: All lanes are now open, and backups have cleared, WSDOT’s traffic systems show.

INITIAL POST: A collision on northbound Interstate 5 by the Puyallup River Bridge is causing a 5-mile backup, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The left lane is blocked, according to WSDOT. Emergency responders are at the scene.

No further details were immediately available. Check back for updates.

CLEARED: Brush fire shuts down ramp from eastbound State Route 16 to southbound Interstate 5

UPDATE as of 7:50 p.m.: Tacoma Fire says they’re leaving the brush fire between east SR 16 and south I-5, and that the ramp is reopened. The fire is under control.

7:13 p.m.: The fire is just about under control, and the ramp should reopen in about 15 minutes, according to Tacoma Fire. Construction workers saw a blaze at the same location late this morning from where they were working, and were able to put it out with a fire extinguisher, according to Tacoma Fire. Man pulled from burning car on I-5 in Tacoma

Three good Samaritans helped pulled a man out of a burning car that got hit on Interstate 5 in Tacoma on Thursday night.

The 39-year-old Auburn man was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment, the Washington State Patrol reported.

No other injuries were reported.

The man’s car had been disabled. It didn’t have any lights on and was in a lane of northbound I-5 just south of South 56th Street, the Washington State Patrol reported.

A semi-truck struck the disabled car, pushing it up the embankment on the right shoulder. The car burst into flames.

ALL CLEAR: I-5 ramp in Tacoma closed for overturned car

Washington State Patrol troopers and Tacoma firefighters are responding to a one-car rollover crash on a ramp from northbound Interstate 5 to westbound Highway 16 in Tacoma. Traffic has already started to back up, according to police scanner chatter. State DOT traffic cameras show a car on its top. UPDATE: The DOT web site reports the serious-injury accident is located on northbound I-5 at the exit to westbound State Route 16.

UPDATE 2: The northbound I-5 ramp is blocked by the rollover crash. Troopers, transportation crews, firefighters and paramedics are on the scene.
