Man arrested in stabbing last week at Hilltop grocery store

Tacoma police have arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of stabbing and critically injuring another man last week at a Hilltop grocery store.

The 31-year-old victim suffered a lacerated bicep, punctured lung and damage to his spleen during the May 16 incident.

Prosecutors on Thursday charged Steffan Dupree Gale with first-degree assault. He was ordered held in Pierce County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail during his afternoon court appearance.

Tacoma police and charging documents provided the following information.

Man stabbed during argument at Hilltop store

A 31-year-old man was stabbed and critically injured late Wednesday during an altercation at a Hilltop grocery store.

The victim was listed in critical but stable condition at Tacoma General Hospital, Tacoma police reported.

The stabbing occurred shortly after 11 p.m. at Safeway, 1112 S. M St. The victim and suspect had been in the store when they got into an altercation. Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the two men know each other.

“They have had dealings previously,” he said.

UPDATED: No charges filed in death of man found in Hilltop alley

UPDATED at 2:05 p.m.

Pierce County prosecutors have decided not to file charges against a 46-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing another man early Wednesday.

Phil Sorensen, assistant chief criminal deputy prosecutor, said the man acted in self-defense.

The man had been arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder in the death of Stanley Howard.

The 56-year-old Tacoma man was found dead early Wednesday in an alley off South 19th Street between South M Street and South Sheridan Avenue.

Tacoma police detectives say Howard and the 46-year-old man have known each other for several years.

UPDATED: Man arrested in early-morning slaying in Hilltop alley

UPDATED at 1:20 p.m.

Tacoma police have arrested a man in connection with the death of another man found in a Hilltop alley early today.

The suspect, described as in his 40s, has been booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said this afternoon.

Investigators say the victim and suspect knew each other. They had a fight and the victim was stabbed, Fulghum said.

Tacoma police seek to ID suspect in gas station robberies

Tacoma police detectives are looking for help in identifying the man suspected of robbing the same Hilltop gas station twice at gunpoint.

The man robbed the Chevron at South 11th Street and South Sprague Avenue at 4:55 a.m. March 30 and at 4:55 a.m. April 3.

During both heists, the robber wielded a gun, went over or behind the sales counter and threatened to harm the clerk. The robber grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and ran from the store, police reported.

WHAT WAS THAT: Tacoma police activity on Hilltop

Tacoma police were checking out a home after gunshots rang out this afternoon on a Hilltop street.

Members of the department’s SWAT team planned to clear the home near South Ninth Street and Sheridan Avenue, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

Gunshots were fired in the area shortly after noon. The shooting sent Jason Lee Middle and Bryant Elementary schools into lockdowns.

Fulghum said no one appears to have been injured.

The investigation centered around a home. Most of the occupants had been cleared from the home.

The department’s SWAT team was going to finish searching the house.

Man wields gun, robs same Tacoma gas station twice in five days

Tacoma police were searching for a man suspected of robbing the same Hilltop convenience store at gunpoint twice in five days.

The man was described as black, in his early 30s and about 6 feet tall with a medium build.  He wore dark clothing and a hooded jacket. In each robbery, he wore a ski mask or bandana over his face.

The robberies occurred at the Chevron convenience store at 1101 S. Sprague Ave.

Officers search for gunman after shots fired at Tacoma home

Tacoma police are searching for a man suspected of firing a gun several times at another man this morning in the Hilltop area.

No one was shot during the ordeal, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. Officers have an idea of who they are looking for, he added.

The incident began just before 10:30 a.m. when Tacoma police officers were called to a disturbance at a home in the 900 block of South Sprague Avenue.

The victim and a woman had gone to the home as a follow-up to an incident from Monday night, Fulghum said.
