Mishap on boat causes diesel spill into Gig Harbor on Saturday

UPDATE, 4:26 p.m: A private contractor is finishing up the cleanup after an accident aboard a private boat caused at least 50 gallons of diesel fuel to spill into Gig Harbor on Saturday morning, the state Department of Ecology reported.

The spill occurred about 9 a.m. when the owner of 51-foot pleasure boat who wanted to fill the water tank inadvertently began filling the fuel tank instead and it overflowed, said Brook Beeler, an Ecology spokeswoman. She said the two tanks look alike and were located near each other.

Vaughn man pleads not guilty in wreck that killed Gig Harbor woman

A 62-year-old man accused of causing a head-on crash that killed a Gig Harbor woman earlier this month pleaded not guilty this afternoon to vehicular homicide.

Pierce County Superior Court Judge pro-tem Gary Steiner ordered Marvin Odell Moody of Vaughn jailed in lieu of $250,000 bail.

The crash occurred about 8:20 p.m. Oct. 9 on state Route 302 at 144th Street Northwest.

State troopers reported Candice A. Baima, 51, was driving her Ford Explorer west on Route 302 when the pickup Moody was driving crossed the centerline and smashed into her.

Suspect sought after woman attacked while jogging in Gig Harbor

Gig Harbor police are searching for a man who attacked a woman from behind as she jogged on Harborview Drive on Wednesday morning.

The 44-year-old woman had stopped to tie her shoe in the 3500 block of Harborview Drive about 6:50 a.m. When she stood up, a man grabbed her and held a sharp object to her neck, police reported. He told her not to move.

A vehicle approached the area a short time later, spooking the attacker. He took off on foot, police reported.

The woman had two red marks on her neck where the attacker had grabbed her.

Gig Harbor police looking for coffee stand burglar

Gig Harbor police are trying to identify a man who burgled two coffee stands within a three and a half hour time span last week.

The burglar hit the Williams Patrick Coffee stand on Judson Street in downtown Gig Harbor and the Harbor Hill Coffee stand on Borgen Boulevard between 12:30 and 4 a.m. Sept. 27.

In both cases, the suspect used a pry bar to open the coffee stand’s sliding window. He stole cash, then fled, police reported.

Gig Harbor man pushed from cliff, seriously injured at King County park

A 25-year-old Gig Harbor man was seriously injured last weekend when someone pushed him off a cliff and he bounced off some rocks before landing in the Green River.

Justin Billups suffered serious back injuries. Two rods and several screws were inserted into his back during a surgery at Valley Medical Center, the King County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday. He also has a broken foot and heel.

Now, the King County Sheriff’s Office is asking for anyone with information about the incident at Kanasket-Palmer State Park to come forward.

Billups and a friend had been at the park Sunday afternoon.

Man charged in Gig Harbor bank heist

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a 56-year-old man with robbing a Gig Harbor bank earlier this week.

One count of first-degree robbery was filed against Gary Lee King on Tuesday. He was arraigned Tuesday morning and remains in Pierce County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Charging documents provide the following information:

A man, later identified as King, entered the Kitsap Bank, 4714 Point Fosdick Dr., in Gig Harbor on Monday. He walked past an employee to the counter. The man held his right hand in his pocket as if he had a gun and handed the teller a note.

Gig Harbor man, 68, injured in SR302 crash near Purdy

A Gig Harbor man was injured when his motorcycle crashed into a car on state Route 302 near Purdy Thursday afternoon.

The collision took place a little before 3 p.m. The 67-year-old man was riding his 2004 Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide eastbound on SR302 in stop-and-go traffic when he struck a 1999 Honda Civic from behind. The motorcyclist was transported to St. Anthony Hospital; the driver of the Honda, a 68-year-old Gig Harbor woman, was not injured.

The WSP determined that the man had been following the car too closely, according to a press release. No drugs or alcohol

Gig Harbor police looking for gun-wielding robber

Gig Harbor police are searching for a man who robbed a convenience store last week while armed with a gun.

The suspect entered the store in the 6600 block of Wollochet Drive shortly after 10 p.m. May 20. He went up to the clerk, who was cleaning the merchandise area of the store, Gig Harbor police reported.

The robber pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money. The clerk moved behind the counter and was removing the cash drawer when the robber held the gun to the clerk’s forehead. The robber make “increasingly threatening demands,” police reported.
