UPDATED: Crews fight Fox Island brush fire

UPDATE as of 8:55 p.m.: The blaze has been contained and no structures were damaged, fire spokeswoman Nanette Tatom said. Several crew members are on fire watch overnight. Other firefighters and a crew of inmates will return in the morning to ensure the area is safe, she added.

Firefighters responded to a reported brush fire on Fox Island on Tuesday morning. Upon arrival a 200 by 200 area was burning down a hillside. Steep terrain hampered firefighters ability to gain access to the 5-acre fire. The fire continued to spread down a hill to the southwest

Children playing with lighter start Gig Harbor residential fire

Young girls playing with a lighter started a Gig Harbor residential fire that sent their grandfather to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation, according to Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One.
Crews were called at 4:12 p.m. to the 8100 block of 40th Street Northwest.

The homeowner, his daughter and his two granddaughters were home during the fire.

Investigators determined that the blaze started when the two young girls took a lighter and set a toy and plastic hanger on fire in a bedroom, according to Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One.
