Man dies after stabbing in Edgewood; Pierce County sheriff’s office investigates

A teenage boy in Edgewood stabbed his own father to death Friday night, attempting to protect his uncle from an attack, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Mike Blair said the 17-year-old boy was with his teenage cousin and uncle at a residence in the 800 block of 109th Ave. Ct. E. Edgewood, when his father unexpectedly arrived shortly after 10 p.m. and began fighting with the uncle outside in the driveway.

Last Craigslist killing defendant convicted on all counts

UPDATE: The jury has convicted Clabon Berniard on all counts.

He’d been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of first-degree burglary.

The jury has reached a verdict in the last trial connected to a home-invasion robbery that killed an Edgewood father. The verdict is expected to be read as early as 11 a.m.

Closing arguments today in last Craigslist killing trial

Attorneys are set to deliver closing arguments this afternoon in the last trial connected to a home invasion shooting last year that killed an Edgewood father.

Prosecutors allege three men and a woman robbed and killed James Sanders the night of April 28, 2010, after he advertised as diamond ring for sale on Craigslist. Three of the defendants have already been convicted and sentenced to prison for their roles in the attack.

Clabon Berniard has pleaded not guilty to murder and robbery charges and maintained that he was not in the Sanders’ home during the robbery.

UPDATED: Jury convicts woman in last year’s Craigslist slaying

A Pierce County jury has convicted a 22-year-old woman accused of taking part in a home-invasion robbery last year that killed an Edgewood father and terrorized his family.

The jury’s verdict was announced this morning. The jurors found Amanda Knight guilty as charged of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree assault.

Knight is scheduled to be sentenced May 13. She faces more than 50 years in prison.

Knight is the second principal defendant to be convicted in the slaying of Jim Sanders, 43. Last month, a different jury convicted Kiyoshi Higashi, 23, of similar charges. He was

Jurors start deliberations in second Craigslist killing trial

Jurors have begun deliberating the fate of a 22-year-old woman accused in a home-invasion robbery last year during which an Edgewood father was killed.

Prosecutors have charged Amanda Knight with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree assault. She pleaded not guilty.

She’s the second of four defendants to go to trial in the slaying of Jim Sanders, 43. Attorneys delivered closing arguments in the trial this morning.

Knight testified Tuesday that she took part in the crimes only because her co-defendants threatened to hurt her and her family if she didn’t.

Trial of second defendant begins today in Craigslist slaying

Opening arguments are scheduled this morning in the trial of a 22-year-old woman accused in a deadly home-invasion robbery last year in Edgewood.

Amanda Knight has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of first-degree assault. She’s the second of four defendants to go to trial in the slaying of Jim Sanders the night of April 28, 2010.

Prosecutors contend Knight and Kiyoshi Higashi went to the Sanders home after Jim Sanders listed a diamond ring for sale on Craigslist. The two posed as buyers and, after they entered the home, Higashi pulled out a gun.

Blaze destroys abandoned mobile home in Edgewood

Fire investigators are looking into what sparked an early morning blaze that destroyed a mobile home in Edgewood.

East Pierce Fire & Rescue crews were notified of a house fire on 106th Avenue East just before 2 a.m. today, Assistant Chief Russ McCallion said.

By the time firefighters arrived, the mobile home was engulfed in flames. The roof and walls had collapsed, McCallion said.

The home, which had some additions built onto it, has reportedly been abandoned for the past two years.

Girlfriend accused of helping in Edgewood homicide back in Pierce County

The girlfriend of a man accused in a deadly Edgewood home invasion robbery has returned to Pierce County to face charges.

Jenna Ford was booked into Pierce County Jail just before 1:30 a.m. today, according to the online jail roster. She’s scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

Pierce County prosecutors have previously charged her with three counts of first-degree rendering criminal assistance. She had been arrested earlier this month in Arkansas, where she was undergoing National Guard training.
