Eatonville couple found dead after apparent homicide-suicide identified

An Eatonville couple found dead in their home Friday after an apparent homicide-suicide have been identified as Petra and Charles Longland.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies said the couple was seen alive Thursday. A relative discovered the bodies Friday afternoon in their home in the 38200 block of 112th Avenue East.

Investigators believe Charles Longland, 70, shot and killed his 68-year-old wife before killing himself. A gun was recovered at the scene.


Two Eatonville schools locked down this morning

Eatonville Elementary and Middle schools were locked down for about 45 minutes this morning after two staff members and a student spotted a parent who is prohibited from coming onto school grounds.

No one was harmed, Eatonville School District Superintendent Rich Stewart said.

The parent has a restraining order that says he cannot contact his children. When he was spotted on the playground, Eatonville police were called and the two schools locked down about 9:20 a.m.


Eatonville school lockdown resolved

A domestic violence incident in the neighborhood of two Eatonville schools caused school officials to put the schools into lockdown briefly this morning, said Eatonville Superintendent Richard Stewart.

He said school officials were notified of the incident shortly before 8:30 a.m. this morning by Pierce County Sheriffs deputies. Eatonville Elementary and Eatonville Middle School were placed on lockdown for about 10 minutes, Stewart said. He said parents were notified by automatic phone call, and that they will also receive a note from the schools about the lockdown.


ALL CLEAR: Crash blocks lane of SR 7 near Eatonville

A rollover crash is blocking the southbound lane of State Route 7 near Eatonville, the state DOT reports.

The accident occurred near Weyerhauser Road. Traffic is being alternated around the scene.

Troopers and transportation crews are on the scene, DOT reports.

2:30 p.m. UPDATE: Both directions of SR 7 are now blocked while crews upright a semi involved in the crash.

4:30 p.m. UPDATE: Both directions of SR 7 near Weyerhauser Road remain blocked while crews attempt to upright a semi involved in a rollover collision.  Previously, only the southbound lane was blocked. Motorists should take alternate routes.

ALL CLEAR: Jack-knifed semi blocks SR 7 in Eatonville

A semi-truck carrying 98,000 pounds of wood chips has jack-knifed on State Route 7 in Eatonville, the state DOT reports this morning.

The crash, which occurred shortly before 5 a.m., is blocking the northbound lanes of SR 7 near Weyerhauser Road. Crews are alternating one-way traffic around the scene using the southbound lanes.

Crews will have to remove the wood ships before the semi can be towed from the scene, DOT reports. The process is expected to take several hours.

Motorists should expect delays and find alternative routes.

UPDATED: Two-alarm house fire in Eatonville Sunday night

Crews from Orting Valley Fire and Rescue and other departments battled a two-alarm house fire in Eatonville late into Sunday night.

The blaze at 36702 Meridian E. was reported just before 8 p.m., according to scanner traffic. No occupants were in the home at the time.

UPDATE: Investigators told our news partners, KIRO TV, that the fire was suspicious. It burned a home and metal shop.

The blaze was under investigation.
