Crews rescue 90-pound mastiff scared of thunder by Lake Tapps

Even a 90-pound mastiff can get spooked by thunderstorms.

One who lives on the northeast side of Lake Tapps got scared during the stormy weather Monday, and went down a 20-foot embankment near the 21300 block of 10th Street East.

The owner tried to get the pooch back up, and hoped the dog might come up on his own.

But two days later, he called in reinforcements.

East Pierce Fire & Rescue crews arrived about 12:30 p.m. today with a technical rescue team and rescued the mastiff.

East Pierce recognized for heart safety programs

East Pierce Fire & Rescue was nationally recognized today for its efforts to prevent and treat cardiac-related diseases.

The agency was chosen out of those serving communities of fewer than 100,000 to receive the 2013 Heart Safe Community Award.

East Pierce was chosen for its efforts during the past two years to start a cardiac arrest resuscitation program that included “high-performance” CPR training for firefighters, debriefs after calls and participation in a program that compares East Pierce to other state agencies.

The effort has improved cardiac arrest survival rates, according to the department.

East Pierce also started a free, one-hour CPR training class targeting

Officials say 7 injured in vehicle crash in Sumner

UPDATE as of 5:41 p.m. The crash involved two vehicles about 5 p.m. Most patients were treated at the scene and two were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to East Pierce. Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and South King Fire & Rescue also responded. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash.

INITIAL POST: A vehicle crash at West Valley Highway East and 24th Street East has injured seven people this evening, according to East Pierce Fire & Rescue.

House fire displaces family of four in Prairie Ridge

A family of four is being assisted by the American Red Cross after an early morning house fire in Prairie Ridge that damaged their home.

Firefighters responded to a house fire in the 13100 block of Prairie Ridge Drive East just before 7:30 a.m. Monday, according to East Pierce Fire & Rescue.

A man was treated at the scene for breathing difficulties, but otherwise the family escaped without injuries, East Pierce officials said.

Firefighters contained the flames primarily to a bedroom.

Crews are still investigating the cause of the blaze and the cost of the damage.

UPDATED: Crews fighting house fire near Bonney Lake, treating injured occupant

UPDATE as of 9:24 p.m. Crews were sent to the fire at 7:41 p.m. and have knocked it down. Investigators are about to start examining the scene. The occupant was examined for smoke inhalation, but refused treatment, according to fire chief Jerry Thorson. The home, a split level in unincorporated Pierce County near Bonney Lake, is probably a total loss, Thorson said.

“It appears it (the fire) was well involved before anyone called,” he added.

UPDATED: Crews fighting multiple fires off SR 410, delays expected

UPDATE as of 4 :22 p.m. The fires are extinguished, East Pierce says.

INITIAL POST: East Pierce Fire & Rescue was called this afternoon to a small outside fire in the 26200 block of state Route 410, in unincorporated Pierce County. The first unit on scene reports four large fires in the area, according to East Pierce.

The largest is 30 feet away from trailers and campers at Uncle Johns RV park, East Pierce officials say.

Police have been asked to help control traffic in the area.

Delays are expected between Buckley and Bonney Lake, according to East Pierce.

Crews trying to rescue driver of car that fell into ravine south of Buckley

UPDATE as of 7:21 p.m. :

The driver was rescued and taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to East Pierce Fire & Rescue.

The man tried to turn his car around by the bridge about 1 p.m., when the vehicle went over the embankment, East Pierce officials said.

He tried to climb out, lost his footing, and fell about 100 to 150 feet into the ravine, toward the Carbon River.

A pair of off-duty officers called 911 after they saw the car about 4 p.m. and heard the man yelling for help.

T-bone collision with injuries reported north of Wilkeson

UPDATE: Both patients have been taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to East Pierce. One was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital and the other to Good Samaritan Hospital.

It appears that a sedan T-boned a flatbed truck carrying lumber, which spilled and blocked Johns Road until 4 p.m, according to East Pierce. SR 165 stayed open, they said.
