UPDATED: State schools chief Randy Dorn arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in Orting

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn was arrested early Sunday in Orting under suspicion of driving under the influence, his office confirmed Tuesday.

The traffic stop occurred at about 1:30 a.m. at roughly the 300 block of Washington Avenue North, said Orting Police Chief Bill Drake. That’s the same block as Orting High School.

Dorn said in a statement Tuesday that he and his family were attending a community event Saturday night where he drank beer with dinner. He was stopped by local police on the way home, he said.

Man charged after Sunday pursuit in East Pierce County

Pierce County prosecutors have filed charges against a 32-year-old man who allegedly sped through east Pierce County on Sunday afternoon as he tried to elude sheriff’s deputies.

Raymond D. McCloud Jr. was charged Monday with felony DUI, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

Charging documents provide the following information.

Woman charged with DUI, trying to elude sheriff’s deputies

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a 27-year-old woman with trying to elude Pierce County sheriff’s deputies Friday night.

Davy Chan Chea was charged Monday with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, driving while under the influence, driving with a suspended or revoked license and operating a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device.

Court documents provide the following information:

Two deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 17900 block of 18th Avenue Court East just after 9 p.m. Friday. A deputy spotted the suspicious vehicle driving toward them. The driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

361 drunken drivers arrested in Pierce County during recent emphasis

Law enforcement officers arrested 361 suspected drunken drivers in Pierce County during a recent three-week enforcement campaign.

Statewide, officers arrested 2,818 drivers on suspicion of DUI as part of the Drive Hammered, Get Nailed effort from Aug. 14 to Sept. 7.

The Washington State Traffic Safety Commission provided money for the extra patrols. The following agency participated in the campaign in Pierce County: Bonney Lake, DuPont, Edgewood, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Milton, Orting, Puyallup, Sumner, Tacoma and University Place police departments, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol.


296 drunken drivers arrested during holiday weekend

Washington State Patrol troopers pulled over 296 suspected drunken drivers over the Labor Day weekend, the agency reported today.

Troopers got some help from the public in spotting impaired drivers. Forty-four drivers called 911 to report suspicious driving activity.

When troopers found the suspect vehicle, they arrested 19 on suspicion of drunken driving, one on suspicion of drug-related impaired driving and one on a warrant. Another four were written tickets, the State Patrol reported.

Troopers also investigated three fatalities in Okanogan, Skagit and King counties. The number was down from four during the Labor Day weekend in 2008.


Man tried to bribe officer, got booked into jail instead

Pierce County prosecutors say a 37-year-old man repeatedly tried to bribe a Tacoma police officer during his drunken-driving arrest Tuesday night.

Prosecutors charged David James Caldwell on Wednesday with bribery and driving with under the influence of intoxicants.

Court documents provide the following information:

Tacoma police officers got a report of a possible drunken driver and checked it out. They found Caldwell siting in the driver’s seat of his still-running vehicle in front of his home.

He admitted he had five beers and two shots of vodka at a Sixth Avenue establishment, then drove home.
