Second Craigslist defendant sentenced to long prison term

A Pierce County judge this afternoon sentenced Amanda Knight to more than 71 years in prison for her role in the death of an Edgewood father gunned down in his home last year.

A jury convicted Knight, 22, last month of six crimes, including first-degree murder, in the April 2010 death of James Sanders.

Prosecutors argued Knight set up a robbery by calling Sanders regarding a ring he’d advertised on Craigslist. She and codefendant Kiyoshi Higashi later went to Sanders home under the pretense of buying the ring.

Once inside, Higashi pulled out a gun, and he and

Prosecution, defense rest in second trial tied to deadly Edgewood home-invasion case

Lawyers are scheduled to give closing arguments Wednesday in the second trial tied to a home-invasion robbery that left an Edgewood father dead.

Amanda Knight, 22, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree assault. She’s the second of four defendants to go to trial in the slaying of Jim Sanders, 43.

Prosecutors allege Knight and Kiyoshi Higashi went to Sanders’ home April 28, 2010, after Sanders listed a diamond ring for sale on Craigslist. The two posed as buyers, and, after they entered the home, Higashi pulled a gun.

Jury selection under way in case against man accused of killing Edgewood father during Craigslist robbery

Pierce County prosecutors and the defense attorney for Kiyoshi Higashi are picking a jury this morning for Higashi’s first-degree murder trial.

Higashi is accused of shooting James Sanders to death in April 2010. Prosecutors contend Higashi and three acquaintances planned to rob Sanders in his home after the Edgewood father advertised some jewelry on Craigslist.

Sanders was shot when he tried to defend his wife and one of his sons, who were being kicked and pistol-whipped.

Opening statements in Higashi’s trial could come Thursday.
