WHAT IS THAT: Is there an oil spill on Commencement Bay?

That was the question from a reader who called The News Tribune this morning after seeing a lot of maritime activity on Commencement Bay.

The answer is no.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the marine spills response unit is conducting a drill on the water.

The exercise involves the Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers and state Department of Ecology.

Why were helicopters over Commencement Bay today?

A reader sent us an anonymous tip this afternoon after spotting seven  helicopters over Commencement Bay.

Our news partner, KIRO TV, reports that an orca pod was spotted near Maury Island. The pod had been spotted earlier today near Alki.
