Man who retreated inside house after firing shots near Fife Heights surrenders to authorities

UPDATE, 8:57 P.M.: The man surrendered and was taken into custody with minor injuries, Troyer said. When the suspect was assured his two dogs would be taken car of, and that a friend would be outside when authorities took him into custody, he surrendered, Troyer said. No one else was injured.

UPDATE, 6:48 P.M.: Authorities have several of the suspect’s friends speaking to the man on his cell phone, trying to convince him to come out, Troyer said. The suspect has rifles and firearms, and was reportedly firing at residences up and down his street, Troyer said.

Listing barge dumps scrap cars into Commencement Bay, crews work to stabilize vessel


A Canadian barge listing along Marine View Drive on Sunday appeared to dump some of the scrap metal cars it was carrying into the water near Browns Point as crews tried to stabilize it, according to the state Department of Ecology.

The vessel was reported as listing Sunday morning, at which point the company expecting the metal hired a private group to salvage the barge, DOE specialist Ron Holcomb said.

Holcomb said he believed the owner of the barge had been contracted to deliver the cars to metal recycler Schnitzer Steel’s location along the Hylebos Waterway.

Departments to practice rescues in water near Browns Point today

Nineteen first responder agencies will gather at Browns Point today to practice rescues in the water.

The exercise series should last from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This is the fourth year the departments have practiced the drills together.

Participants will demonstrate hoisting victims into a helicopter and using boats for rescues. A subsurface dive rescue team will also join.

The exercise is intended to familiarize agencies with one another’s resources and learn how to better communicate in emergencies.

Agencies participating in the drills include Anderson Island Fire, Browns Point/Dash Point Fire, Central Pierce Fire and Rescue, Gig Harbor Fire
