Third-grader shot at Bremerton elementary school

A third-grade girl was injured this afternoon after being shot in the stomach at Armin Jahr Elementary School in Bremerton, police said.

The shooting occurred about 1:30 p.m. in a classroom as students were leaving for the day. Witnesses reported hearing a loud boom and then somebody came on the school’s loudspeaker system and yelled for a lockdown.

The lockdown was later lifted and parents were able to pick up their children on foot about 2 p.m.

Police say they found a gun in the classroom and have detained a 9-year-old boy.

Fife man dies from injuries suffered in Jan. 30 collision

A 70-year-old Fife man has died from injuries suffered in a collision last month, the Washington State Patrol reported tonight.

Thomas Foster Loy died Feb. 7 at Tacoma General Hospital. He had been hospitalized after a Jan. 30 crash.

Troopers said he was driving a 1966 Ford Mustang northbound on Interstate 5 near Pacific Avenue when he lost control and went into another lane. Another vehicle struck Loy’s Mustang before he hit a guardrail.

The 53-year-old Lakewood woman in the other vehicle was not injured in the crash.

Books, map turn up during Powell-related search at recycling center

Pierce County sheriff’s investigators found some books and a map of Utah during a search Sunday of paper at a Graham-area recycling center.

Investigators sorted through 26,000 pounds of paper after receiving a tip that Josh Powell was seen dropping off paper at the center the day before he set his Graham-area home on fire, killing himself and his two young sons.

Searchers found a testament with Powell’s name on it, some paperback books with his wife’s name on them and the Utah map, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

Deputies seize cell phone of Josh Powell’s sister

Pierce County sheriff’s detectives confiscated the cell phone of Josh Powell’s sister after she refused to give emails and voicemails he left for her before he killed his sons Sunday, newly filed court records show.

Alina Powell called 911 on Sunday to report she’s received four emails and a message from her brother that made her concerned for his safety. Detectives contacted her later in the day and requested copies.

“During the interview, Alina became upset and refused to allow Det. Sanders to copy the emails and refused to provide the phone to Det. Sanders,” the search warrant states.

Memorial fund set up for Powell boys

A memorial fund has been set up in memory of Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, who were killed by their father Sunday afternoon. The money will assist with funeral costs.

Donations can be made to The Charlie and Braden Powell Memorial Account at any Wells Fargo bank branch.
