Man pleads not guilty after allegedly driving headlong into Pierce County patrol car, swinging at sheriff’s deputy after chase

A man accused of driving into a patrol car and then taking swings at a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy pleaded not guilty Monday.

The 46-year-old Tacoma man was charged with second- and third-degree assault and trying to elude police. He was held pending $500,000 bail.

According to court records, the man was driving a stolen vehicle and making random turns about 3:15 a.m. July 12 near 96th Street East and 48th Avenue East in Summit when deputies tried to pull him over.

Citizens grab teenager trying to flee hit-and-run in Summit area

A 17-year-old boy fleeing his home after a domestic violence incident plowed into another vehicle and tried to run from the scene but bystanders held him until Pierce County sheriff’s deputies arrived.

The incident took place about 12:15 p.m. at 112th Street East and Canyon Road East in the Summit area.

“He tried to run from the scene but citizens grabbed him and caught him,” department spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The teenager is in custody. Deputies are still trying to determine what led up to the crash.

Medical Examiner identifies men fatally shot near Summit Thursday

A pair of men who were shot dead near Summit Thursday have been identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Roy Piercy of Roy and Frederick Adamkiewicz of Tacoma, both 30, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head, the office said.

A Pierce County man shot the men who were apparently trying to steal marijuana from what deputies called an illegal pot-growing operation, according to sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer.

The man’s 9-year-old son was with him when he fired outside the house in the 5900 block of 132nd Street East, according the sheriff’s department.

UPDATED: Authorities find felon hiding in chicken coop near Summit

UPDATE 3:55 p.m.: Deputies found the man hiding in a vacant chicken coop in the 4900 block of 96th Street East, said spokesman Ed Troyer. A K-9 was sent in to get him, and medical aid is on the way to check the suspect before he is booked on multiple charges, Troyer said. A citizen contacted authorities when he noticed his coop was forced open, Troyer added.

Helmet-wearing suspect sought in 2 Pierce County bank robberies

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department has released surveillance photos of a suspect wanted in two bank robberies, including one Monday at the Columbia Bank branch inside Summit Trading Company grocery on Canyon Road East near Puyallup.

The first crime occurred July 8 at the U.S. Bank branch inside an Albertsons store in Milton.

In both robberies, the suspect came into the grocery store wearing a motorcycle helmet. He walked up to a bank teller and then handed over a note demanding cash and threatening violence, the sheriff’s department said.

Man robs Summit-area Chase Bank Saturday

A man robbed the Chase Bank inside the Summit-area Safeway store Saturday and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The man verbally implied he had a weapon, but no one saw a weapon, said sheriff’s department spokesman Ed Troyer.

The robbery took place around 11 a.m. Saturday in the bank at 11501 Canyon Road E. The robber fled in a newer model gray pickup truck, and may have had a getaway driver, Troyer said.

Fire damages vacant duplex near Puyallup

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to an early morning fire south of the Summit area in a vacant rental duplex.

The call came in at 3:17 a.m. reporting possible smoke coming from the duplex at 3906 128th St. E. Arriving units discovered there also was a fire  and more units were called to the scene.

No one was living in the duplex though the structure was connected to power. Damage was estimated at $68,000 with most of the fire damage to one unit. The other unit sustained some smoke damage.
