Wrong-way driver in Spanaway hit three cars before arrest

A Tacoma man with four prior DUIs was arrested early Sunday after driving the wrong way on state Route 7 in Spanaway and hitting three vehicles, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers were called to the area where SR 7 intersections with state Route 507 about 12:30 a.m. after several people called 911 to report a wrong-way driver.

The 34-year-old man was arrested without incident.

Moment of Blessing ceremony planned Monday for Spanaway mother beaten to death

Local clergy will hold a Moment of Blessing Monday in front of a Spanaway home where 56-year-old Brenda Williams was allegedly killed by her son April 30.

The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. at 5500 Spanaway Loop Rd. South, Associated Ministries announced today.

Williams and her ex-husband, 64-year-old Lavonn Williams, were found unconscious and bleeding from head wounds April 30. Brenda Williams died the next day and the elder Williams suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Lavonn Williams told Pierce County sheriff’s deputies that they asked their son to leave the home shortly before the attacks.

Mental evaluation ordered for man charged with beating his mother to death in Spanaway

A 39-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of his mother was ordered to Western State Hospital today to undergo an evaluation to determine whether he’s mentally competent to stand trial.

Lavonn Williams II, also charged with attempted murder for allegedly beating his father during the same attack, has yet to be arraigned. Williams is expected back in court May 18 for a competency hearing.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies arrested Williams on Monday after a neighbor called 911 to report a disturbance in the Spanaway home of Williams’ mother.

First-degree murder charge filed against Spanaway man accused of killing his mother

This just in from Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office:

Today Prosecutor Mark Lindquist charged Lavonn Williams II, 39, with Murder in the First Degree and Attempted Murder in the First Degree for the brutal beating of his parents, 56 year old Brenda Williams and 64 year old Lavonn Williams.

On April 30, 2012, Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a burglary in progress. Upon arrival deputies heard a commotion in the lower portion of the residence, a mother-in-law style apartment. Deputies contacted the homeowner who lives in the upper portion of the house. UPDATED: Pierce County sheriff’s detectives investigating homicide

UPDATE, as of 1:48 p.m.: Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identifies victim as Brenda Williams. She died of blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

UPDATE, as of 1:09 p.m.: Pierce County sheriff’s detectives were called to a house in the 15500 block of Spanaway Loop Road about 10 p.m. Monday to investigate a loud disturbance.

“911 reports were of glass breaking and multiple people screaming,” Troyer said.

Deputies found a man and woman lying on the floor with head wounds and the couple’s 39-year-old son standing in the room screaming, Troyer said.

PLU evacuates indoor pool when swimmers notice ceiling cracks

Firefighters are shooting snow off the roof of the pool at Pacific Lutheran University as the school tries to figure out how cracks surfaced in the building’s ceiling this morning.

The pool was evacuated today when swimmers saw the cracks, university spokesman Greg Brewis said. He said structural engineers are expected to investigate the building today.

Heavy snow on the roof could be contributing to the damage.

“It’s hard to believe it’s only snow,” Brewis said. “We’ll have to see.”

Spanaway man sentenced to 17 years for drug and gun convictions

A federal judge in Tacoma sentenced Spanaway resident Bernard Curtis Davis to more than 17 years in prison today for illegally possessing firearms and marijuana, authorities reported.

A jury last year convicted Davis, 30, of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Leighton said the long sentence was warranted because Davis “engaged in gratuitous violence,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Seattle reported in a news release.

Pierce County sheriff’s detectives investigating a robbery in 2009 traced a car spotted at the scene to Davis.

Death of man found in Spanaway Lake ruled a suicide

The death of a 49-year-old man found submerged in Spanaway Lake Sunday has been ruled a suicide.

The News Tribune does not identify people who commit suicide.

A resident walking around the lake found the body about 8:30 a.m. Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the man had rocks in his jeans and did not have identification on him.
