Partygoers in Spanaway beat suspected drunken driver unconscious

Partygoers at a Spanaway home beat a 61-year-old suspected driver unconscious after he allegedly crashed into the house where the party was taking place, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The accident happened shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday when the driver went through a wooden fence  and struck the front porch of a home in the 15100 block of 2nd Avenue East.

Several of the partygoers “took offense to the possibly intoxicated driver crashing and opted to assault the driver repeatedly,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Spanaway biker suspected of plotting to blow up bar indicted on five federal counts

A Spanaway man suspected of plotting to blow up a local biker bar has been indicted by a federal grand jury on five counts, including possessing explosives, court records show.

Karl Twilleager, 66, is to be arraigned Friday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma.

Man kills himself after standoff with deputies at Spanaway home

After more than a four-hour standoff with Pierce County sheriff’s deputies, a Spanaway man allegedly shot and killed himself early this morning, spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The incident started shortly after 11 p.m. when deputies went to a house near 161st Street South and Pacific Avenue South to serve a DUI warrant on the man.

As deputies approached the home, a man allegedly fired several shots at them from a second-story window.

No deputies were injured. They called for backup and used to tear gas in an effort to force the man from the home.

Deputies recover body of missing man from Spanaway Lake

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies on Friday recovered the body of a man who slipped under water while tubing behind a boat at Spanaway Lake earlier this month.

Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said someone spotted the body of Salavador John Sanchez, 55, floating in the lake about 1 p.m. Deputies brought the body to shore about two hours later and turned it over to the Medical Examiner’s Office, Troyer said.

Sanchez, who lived in Spanaway, went missing May 5 after the tube he and two others were riding on flipped over, deputies said. None of the riders were wearing life jackets.

Deputies say man who drowned in Spanaway Lake wasn’t wearing life vest

A man presumed to have drowned Sunday in Spanaway Lake was not wearing a life vest as initially thought, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Wednesday.

Deputies initially said the three people riding the inner tube that flipped while being pulled by a powerboat were wearing life jackets, and that the third person, 55-year-old Salvador John Sanchez of Spanaway, slipped out of his and under the surface.

Deputies end search for man presumed to have drowned in Spanaway Lake

After more than two days of sonar sweeps, officials have ended the unsuccessful search for the body of a man presumed to have drowned in Spanaway Lake Sunday.

“We won’t be searching again,” Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Crews searched about three-quarters of a square mile of the lake, which has almost five feet of silt at the bottom in some places, he said.

Divers searched for the man, and deputies used remotely controlled underwater cameras too.

The 55-year-old was riding an inner tube being pulled by a powerboat, when the float flipped.

Deputies detain man they say fatally shot 29-year-old in Spanaway, reported shooting to 911

UPDATE 2: Troyer tells Lights & Sirens this morning that the dead man is not a soldier but the spouse of a soldier. We’re hoping to get more details of what happened later today.

UPDATE: Both the alleged shooter and the victim are Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ed Troyer said.  The death is the agency’s first homicide this year, he added.

Spanaway-based identity theft ring taken down with three arrests

A large identity theft ring based in Spanaway was taken down this week, according to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office.

Two men, aged 32 and 26, and a woman, 32, were charged with multiple counts related to identity theft and unlawfully possessing firearms.

The trio pleaded not guilty Tuesday and were ordered jailed in lieu of $150,000 each.

The investigation started Sunday after the ring’s leader led deputies on a brief pursuit while riding a stolen motorcycle.
