Man charged with shooting that ended in South Hill school bus crash

Pierce County prosecutors this morning charged a 32-year-old man with multiple felonies connected to a drive-by shooting that eventually resulted in a collision with a school bus in the South Hill area of Pierce County.

Sopheap Chith is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon on charges of drive-by shooting, assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm, reckless driving, hit and run, and driving with a suspended license.

UPDATE: Car and school bus crash after car was involved in shooting 7 blocks away, deputies say

UPDATE as of 5:25 p.m. Deputies arrested a 32-year-old man for investigation of the shooting, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. Deputies found the suspect in the Parkland area and the car hidden behind a building in the 13600 block of Pacific Avenue in Parkland, Troyer said. The man was arrested for investigation of assault, hit and run, and possession of stolen property.

Puyallup police arrest two men suspected of robbing store

Puyallup police arrested two men suspected of robbing a store and leading officers on a short pursuit Monday night.

The incident started about 11:15 p.m. at the South Hill Pit Stop Express Mart, 801 South Hill Park Dr.

Police said a 47-year-old Sumner man wearing a ski mask walking into the store, pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded money. He then fled to a waiting car driven by a 42-year-old Sumner man.

Bomb scare closes South Hill Mall Transit Center; it’s back open now

A bomb scare shut down the South Hill Mall Transit Center for Pierce Transit for part of today.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and Puyallup police responded to a report of a suspicious package, said Pierce Transit spokesman Lars Erickson.

Erickson said he got word of the bomb scare about 5:30 p.m. The transit center reopened around 7:40 p.m.

Bus service was moved from the transit center to Meridian while the center was closed, Erickson said. “Our service wasn’t interrupted,” he said. “It was a minor detour for us.”

Blessing to be held this morning for South Hill woman killed last month

A spiritual gathering will be held this morning outside the South Hill house where a woman was fatally stabbed last month.

The Moment of Blessing for Joyce West will take place at 10 a.m. in the 13000 block of 158th Street Court East. The site will be marked with red and purple ribbons.

The ceremony is open to the public.

West was killed Oct. 27. Her daughter has been charged with the slaying.

UPDATE: Power outage affects schools in South Hill

UPDATE as of 3:08 p.m. Zeiger Elementary School and Rogers High School lost power for about 15 minutes, starting about 2 p.m., Puyallup School District spokesman Brian Fox said.

INITIAL POST: A power outage is affecting 2,300 customers, including several schools in South Hill, according to Tacoma Public Utilities.

It’s unknown what caused the outage. Crews are responding.

UPDATED: South Hill woman charged with fatally stabbing mother claimed to be ‘spiritually raped’

UPDATED as of 1:46 p.m. Meshawn West pleaded not guilty at her arraignment this afternoon. Bail was set at $2 million.

INITIAL POST: A woman charged with stabbing her mother to death in their South Hill home told detectives she decided to attack her mom after being “spiritually raped.”

Meshawn West, 39, was charged today with one count of first-degree murder. She will be arraigned this afternoon.

Woman stabbed to death in South Hill area identified

A woman who was stabbed to death in her South Hill-area home Saturday morning has been identified as Joyce West, 54, by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

West’s 40-year-old daughter allegedly stabbed her mother to death, while West’s husband called 911, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Saturday.

The woman died at a home in the 13000 block of 158th Street Court East.

The suspect also had injuries, and was taken to a hospital Saturday before being booked into the Pierce County Jail.

The suspect appears to have mental health issues and had not been staying long at
