Fifth man to be arraigned today for 1988 Tacoma gang shooting

A 42-year-old man will be arraigned this afternoon in connection with a Tacoma gang shooting, believed to be the city’s first, from a quarter-century ago.

Terris Miller is serving time in the federal system for an unrelated crime. He will be the fifth man arraigned for the Aug. 28, 1988, fatal shooting of Bernard Houston.

Nathaniel Miles, Brian Allen, Anthony Ralls and Darrell Lee, all in their 40s, have already pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

UPDATED: Suspect who tried to run down deputy in Gig Harbor arrested in Tacoma

UPDATE as of 11:47 a.m.: One of the bullets fired by a deputy at the suspect stuck in his sweatshirt, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

No one was injured in the incident.

UPDATE as of 11:11 a.m.: The suspect jumped from his truck at South 54th and South M streets in Tacoma, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The suspect was arrested at South 54th Street and South Sheridan Avenue.

Tacoma police identify officer who shot panhandler after he attacked her

A Tacoma police officer who shot and wounded a panhandler after he allegedly attacked her with a pipe-like object has been identified as Michel Volk, the department reported today.

The incident happened June 29 after the officer asked Cesar Beltran, 53, to move along near the intersection at East 28th Street and East Portland Avenue.

Volk, who has been with the department six years, first tried to shock Beltran with a stun gun but fired her gun when he continued his attack, police said.

Man shot and injured in Tacoma parking lot

A man was shot in the hip Tuesday night while sitting in his car in a fast food parking lot, Tacoma police said.

The victim’s girlfriend called police at 9:30 p.m. to report the shooting in the 2900 block of South 38th Street.

They told officers a man parked next to them, fired a single shot and then drove off.

Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said it’s unclear what prompted the incident. No arrests have been made.


Man arrested for allegedly shooting at Lakewood police

Lakewood police said a 29-year-old man fired at a group of officers responding to a disturbance early this morning.

Officers responded about 12:30 a.m. to a home in the 6500 block of 146th Street Southwest after receiving calls about a loud argument and shots fired.

While speaking with the person who called 911, police “reported hearing sounds of bullets whizzing past them and hitting bushes,” Lt. Jeff Alwine said.

The officers took cover. The alleged shooter’s girlfriend was among the group of people being questioned by police so they had her call him so they could negotiate his surrender.

Man shot outside Pierce County home

THIS STORY HAS BEEN UPDATED: A 52-year-old man was shot in Pierce County this morning after parking up the road from the house of a man he wanted to confront about having an affair with his wife, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The victim, who was shot at least twice, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in serious condition. Investigators are questioning the 55-year-old shooter, who is reportedly cooperating.

The incident happened about 9:10 a.m. outside a home on Canyon Road and 92nd Street East.

No change in condition of Tacoma panhandler shot by officer

A panhandler shot by a Tacoma police officer Saturday remained in critical condition Monday and had not yet been identified, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The man, a white male in his 30s, was taken to Tacoma General Hospital in critical condition after the shooting.

Tacoma officer who shot and critically injured panhandler released from hospital

A Tacoma police officer who shot and critically injured a panhandler during an altercation Saturday has been released from the hospital, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

Cool did not immediately have information Sunday about the condition of the man shot, who she said was treated at the hospital as “John Doe.”

Police said Saturday that the man was panhandling about 3:15 p.m. near East 28th Street and East Portland Avenue, when a Tacoma policewoman told him to move.

The man then attacked the officer by hitting and injuring her in the arm with a pipe-like object, Cool said.
