Puyallup police dog finds felon hiding under mobile home porch

A Puyallup police dog led officers to a wanted felon hiding beneath a mobile home porch early this morning.

The dog, Maverick, was assisting Pierce County sheriff’s deputies find the felon, who was believed to be in the Meridian Mobile Estates in the 200 block of Meridian Avenue Southeast.

When police knocked on his trailer about 1 a.m., the man fled. Maverick and his handler were called in and the dog tracked the felon to a nearby mobile home, where he was found hiding under the porch.

The man was taken into custody.

UPDATE as of 4 p.m.: The men were reunited with their families about 3:30 p.m., and are having a “hearty meal” at the National Park Inn, park spokesman Kevin Bacher said.

UPDATE as of 12:33 p.m.: The men were found in the Upper Stevens Creek drainage about 11 a.m. Rescuers were warming them up with hot liquids while assessing the best way to get them off the mountain, park officials said.

UPDATE3: The search was called off at 7 p.m. due to nightfall and the poor weather. Efforts will resume at first light, park spokesman Kevin Bacher said.

UPDATE2: Rescue teams believe they’ve found the two snowboarders who spent the night on Mount Rainier. Crews got to within a half mile of two men on Paradise Glacier this afternoon and were attempting to reach them about 3:45 p.m., park spokesman Kevin Bacher said.

UPDATE: Snowboarders Derek Tyndall and Thomas Dale called 911 about 4:30 p.m. Sunday to say they were lost in blizzard-like conditions on Mount Rainier.

UPDATE as of 10:06 a.m.: The missing mushroom picker was found about 9:30 a.m. walking five miles from where he was last seen.

The man was cold and wet but does not require medical treatment, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. He told crews he lit a fire to stay warm overnight.

INITIAL POST: A search is underway in Randle for a 50-year-old mushroom picker who went missing Wednesday on Lone Tree Mountain.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has not identified the missing man other than to say he is from Packwood.

Inmate convicted of vehicular assault in Thurston County escapes from Monroe Correctional Complex

The Department of Corrections is searching for a 37-year-old inmate who escaped Wednesday night from Monroe Correctional Complex.

Officials said Brandon Musto, who was convicted in Thurston County for vehicular assault, only had three months left in a minimum security unit and was found missing about 9 p.m.

He apparently went over a fence, although officials are checking video as they investigate exactly how he got out and whether he had any help, spokesman Chad Lewis said.

A search team was immediately sent out to look for Musto and local law enforcement agencies were notified.

INITIAL POST: A search resumed this morning for a 79-year-old Tacoma man who went missing Sunday morning while mushroom picking in a heavily forested area south of Randle.

About 30 volunteers from various rescue teams are looking for Dapeng Yang, whose family reported him missing after they became separated off of Forest Service Road 26 near Strawberry Mountain.

Deputies search for elderly woman missing from Spanaway care home

Deputies are looking for a 76-year-old woman missing from a Spanaway adult family home, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

She was last seen about 4 p.m. at the facility in the 19800 block of 16th Avenue Court East, employees at the home told deputies.

The woman has possible mental health issues and uses a walker, according to the sheriff’s department.

She was last seen wearing a black jacket and olive green pants and is described as a white female.

Search and Rescue personnel are on scene looking for the woman.

Two hikers stranded overnight were rescued this afternoon and are being treated at Morton General Hospital.

They waved an orange sleeping bag in the air to grab the attention of a search plane flying overhead in the Goat Rock area.

The couple, visiting from Oklahoma, had supplies for a four-day hike but ran into trouble after just a few hours. The 62-year-old husband slid 60 feet down a snow field and struck his head. His 58-year-old wife slipped and fell trying to catch him.

Search team rescues five lost hikers near Summit Lake

A Pierce County sheriff’s search and rescue team escorted five lost hikers out of the mountains Sunday.

Five 18-year-old men set out Saturday for a day hike to Summit Lake in the Carbon River Road area. When they did not return from the five-mile trek, one of their mothers called for help.

Searchers found the hikers’ car at the trailhead and after one of them called home to say they were lost, the team launched a rescue effort Sunday afternoon.

Search expands for missing University Place hiker

Search efforts expanded today for a University Place hiker who hasn’t been seen since Friday, when he went for a solo hike in the Cascade foothills.

Several members of the King County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit were airlifted into the Green Mountain area of Snoqualmie National Forest after a hiker reported seeing 50-year-old John Wright on a trail Friday.
