South End Tacoma safety summit TONIGHT

South End residents are invited to a safety summit tonight at Manitou Park Elementary School, 4330 S. 66th St.

The summit is scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

School and police officials will present information sessions on:

Is your child being bullied or being a bully?

Everything you wanted to know about gangs and graffiti.

How to keep your children safe on the Internet and MySpace.

There will be a free dinner for families, a raffle and activities for the young ones. Translators also will be available.


Tacoma residents will march against crime Saturday

Members of the Dome Top Neighborhood Alliance and Safe Streets block watch groups will take to the streets, armed with homemade signs and bull horns, Saturday morning.

The groups plan to march against crime starting at 11 a.m.

The event is open to “everyone who cares about a better future for our community,” said Darren Pen, a community mobilization specialist for Safe Streets.

The purpose of the event, Pen writes: “To demonstrate our unity, strength and resolve to the drug dealers, thieves, prostitutes and molesters.”

Lakewood cops plan motorcycle rally

In an effort to boost safety awareness, the Lakewood Police Department will hold a motorcycle rally and ride June 23.

The event will coincide with the city’s Summerfest celebration.

Riders should show up at City Hall, 6000 Main Street S.W., about 8 a.m. to register. There will be prizes, refreshments and information on motorcycle safety.

At 11 a.m., L’wood PD motorcycle officers will lead groups of riders on a tour of the Tacoma waterfront and selected sites in Pierce County. The ride will end at Fort Steilacoom Park right about 12:30 p.m. when Summerfest is scheduled

South Enders to march for their neighborhood

Members of the Larchmont neighborhood will take to the sidewalks Saturday to march against the gang activity, graffiti and prostitution that have plagued Pacific Avenue recently.

They’ll march from 1 to 3 p.m.

Participants can meet at Tacoma First Church of God, 9401 A St. The group will march from South 96th Street, down to Pacific Avenue and end at South 72nd Street.

The march has been organized in response to on-going problems in the area.

Save the date: Graham to show off new fire station

Graham Fire & Rescue will hold an open house Nov. 11 at its new Headquarters Fire Station at 23014 70th Ave. E.

The event will run from noon to 4 p.m., and, according to a news release issued Friday, “be a grand affair.”

There will be bouncy rides for the kids, who also can get their pictures taken on the fire trucks. The Lions Club will be cooking hotdogs and hamburgers. Firefighter and paramedics will be on hand as well.
