Man pleads not guilty after allegedly driving headlong into Pierce County patrol car, swinging at sheriff’s deputy after chase

A man accused of driving into a patrol car and then taking swings at a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy pleaded not guilty Monday.

The 46-year-old Tacoma man was charged with second- and third-degree assault and trying to elude police. He was held pending $500,000 bail.

According to court records, the man was driving a stolen vehicle and making random turns about 3:15 a.m. July 12 near 96th Street East and 48th Avenue East in Summit when deputies tried to pull him over.

Thunderstorms possible this afternoon

Thunderstorms may be on tap this afternoon, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures may reach 85 degrees today, making it the hottest day of the week. Friday and Saturday will be almost as warm with a high of 84.

However, there is a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Winds 6 to 11 miles per hour are also expected. Tonight’s high will be 58.

Meteorologist Cliff Mass said the thunderstorms will be “high-based, meaning that the rain will be falling for great distances through dry air.  Thus, only limited precipitation may reach the ground.  Lightning

Pierce County man charged with beating wife, dog

A Pierce County man accused of beating his wife and dog during a fit of anger Friday has been ordered to stay away from them.

The 27-year-old man pleaded not guilty Monday to first-degree animal cruelty and three counts of fourth-degree assault. He was ordered held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Deputies were called to the couple’s home Friday morning by the wife, who claimed her husband was furious their dog had chewed on a small trampoline.

She said her husband beat the dog with the trampoline, held it down with a leash while he strangled it and shoved her

Suspected car thief deputies say faked paralysis to escape pleads not guilty

A suspected car thief deputies said faked paralysis to escape custody pleaded not guilty recently.

Justin Wetrich, 30 of Buckley, faces charges of attempting to elude police, first-degree possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, among other counts.

He was arraigned and pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Deputies said Wetrich crashed a stolen truck in Parkland in late May while attempting to flee law enforcement.

He was taken to the hospital after the wreck, and said he was paralyzed, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Doctors believed him, and he later ran away, deputies said.

‘Military Mistress’ accused of bilking servicemen across nation to face Pierce County fraud charges

Bobbi Ann Finley, the so-called “Military Mistress” accused of bilking servicemen across the nation, was released from an Alabama prison this week.

Her freedom was short-lived.

Two Pierce County detectives met her at the prison gates and arrested her on a 2011 warrant charging her with theft for allegedly convincing a local woman to cash bad checks for her, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Wednesday.

They booked her into the Pierce County Jail on Tuesday, and she appeared in Superior Court on Wednesday afternoon where she was formally charged with second-degree theft. A not guilty plea was entered

Fire destroys mobile home in East Pierce County

A mobile home in East Pierce County was completely destroyed late Tuesday after a fire swept through it.

Fire crews from East Pierce Fire & Rescue ad Orting Valley Fire & Rescue responded to the home in the 26000 block of Johns Road East about 11:30 p.m. and found flames engulfing 2/3 of the single-wide mobile.

The home is between Wilkeson and South Prairie.

Since there were no fire hydrants nearby, firefighters shuttled water to the scene with tenders.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

Man shot outside Pierce County home

THIS STORY HAS BEEN UPDATED: A 52-year-old man was shot in Pierce County this morning after parking up the road from the house of a man he wanted to confront about having an affair with his wife, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The victim, who was shot at least twice, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in serious condition. Investigators are questioning the 55-year-old shooter, who is reportedly cooperating.

The incident happened about 9:10 a.m. outside a home on Canyon Road and 92nd Street East.

Man gets 20 months in prison for causing wreck that killed Graham-Kapowsin soccer player

Editor’s note: A story Tuesday about the fatal car wreck that killed a Graham-Kapowsin soccer player reported that driver Brandon Fair and victim Clara Vallone were friends. While Fair’s lawyer and some letters submitted to the court on his behalf classified the victim and him as friends, Vallone’s father said Tuesday the two barely knew each other.

Maybe Brandon Fair was just trying to be cool. Maybe he just wasn’t thinking.

Whatever the reason, Fair drove recklessly on a clear September day in 2011 and killed Clara Vallone, a 16-year-old soccer player at Graham-Kapowsin High School.
