Suspected car thief deputies say faked paralysis to escape pleads not guilty

A suspected car thief deputies said faked paralysis to escape custody pleaded not guilty recently.

Justin Wetrich, 30 of Buckley, faces charges of attempting to elude police, first-degree possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, among other counts.

He was arraigned and pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Deputies said Wetrich crashed a stolen truck in Parkland in late May while attempting to flee law enforcement.

He was taken to the hospital after the wreck, and said he was paralyzed, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Doctors believed him, and he later ran away, deputies said.

Pierce County deputies catch up with man who faked paralysis to escape custody

Pierce County authorities have captured a suspected car thief who faked paralysis to escape custody.

Justin Wetrich, 30, was booked into the Pierce County Jail on Wednesday. The circumstances surrounding his arrest were not immediately reported.

Wetrich went on the lam in late May after crashing what deputies said was a stolen truck in Parkland while allegedly attempting to flee law enforcement.

Wetrich was Injured in the wreck, and deputies took him to a local hospital and left him there for treatment. Wetrich allegedly complained he was paralyzed, and doctors believed him, authorities said.

KIRO: Suspicious package left behind at Parkland robbery

Our friends at KIRO-TV are reporting that a man robbed the Money Tree store in the 10400 block of Pacific Avenue in Parkland this morning, leaving behind a suspicious package.

Authorities closed down Pacific for a time while explosives experts dismantled the package, which turned out not to be a bomb.

No word on arrests.

Deputy pursuit of stolen vehicle ends in Parkland crash, one suspect trapped in wreck

A law enforcement pursuit of a stolen vehicle ended in a crash in the 2100 block of 112th Street South, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

A man and woman were in the stolen truck that crashed, Troyer said. No other cars were involved in that wreck, he said.

He said the woman was taken into custody right away, and that the man was taken into custody after emergency crews extricated him from the wreck. Both are being evaluated for minor injuries.

Two men arrested, charged for Parkland jewelry store robbery

Pierce County prosecutors this week charged two men with robbery and kidnapping for allegedly holding up a Parkland jewelry store earlier this year.

Not guilty pleas were entered Wednesday on behalf of Michael Allen Kope, 28, and Jacob Andrew Swier, 21. Kope was ordered jailed in lieu of $200,000 bail, Swier in lieu of $100,000 bail.

According to charging documents, Kope and Swier donned Army fatigues and entered Cascade Custom Jewelers, 10122 Pacific Ave. S., on March 5.

Police: Man stole car from Lakewood dealership while owner had the trunk open

Police say a man drove off the lot of a Lakewood dealership with a used car Saturday, in such a hurry that he left the trunk open.

He didn’t keep it, though, officers said.

Or rather, police didn’t let him, since he allegedly stole the vehicle out from under the owner’s nose.

The owner parked his car at the dealership about 2:45 p.m. at 11503 Pacific Highway Southwest and left his keys on the dash board as he walked to the back of the car and opened the hatchback trunk to get his belongings from the car.

UPDATED: Motorcyclist killed in fiery crash in Parkland was Puyallup man

UPDATE as of 1:34 p.m.: The motorcyclist has been identified as Craig Calucci, 29, of Puyallup.

INITIAL POST: A motorcyclist was killed in Parkland early this morning after losing control and crashing into a semi-truck before bursting into flames, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The collision happened about 1:15 a.m. at 116th Street South and Spanaway Loop Road. Witnesses told deputies the motorcyclist was driving nearly 100 miles per hour when he missed a corner in the road, tried to straighten out and struck a logging semi-truck.

Serial bank robber sought in Pierce County

Authorities are searching for a 45-year-old man suspected of robbing four Pierce County banks in a week.

Multiple warrants have been issued for Richard Strohmetz, who is also wanted for violating federal probation for bank robbery.

He is considered dangerous, according to Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers.

Strohmetz is white, 5-feet-8 and 185 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

He is accused of holding up an Umpquah Bank branch in Spanaway March 29; a Wells Fargo bank branch in Tacoma Saturday; a Twin Star Credit Union in Parkland Monday; and the same Wells Fargo bank branch in Tacoma Thursday.
