Orting man killed in homicide-suicide crash identified

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified an Orting man killed in a homicide-suicide crash Monday in Graham as Steve Munson, 56.

Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies said Munson died when 19-year-old Justin Bell drove a Ford Mustang more than 100 miles per hour and crashed into the pickup truck the 56-year-old was driving about 11 p.m. near Orting Kapowsin Highway East and 200th Street East.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said Bell, of the Graham area, left a suicide note that said the teenager was going to drive his car into a pole.

Emphasis patrol for drivers on cell phones starts Monday in Pierce County

Drivers on their cell phones have become a top safety concern, prompting an enforcement patrol that will put more law enforcement on Pierce County roads starting Monday.

The emphasis patrol will last until June 2.

During the same enforcement period last year, authorities doled out 1,059 cell phone violations and 3,171 seat belt violations statewide.

Participating agencies include Fircrest, Lakewood, Orting, Puyallup, Sumner and Tacoma police, as well as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the Washington State Patrol.

Woman, 18, charged with vehicular assault for Orting crash that injured two

An 18-year-old woman will face two vehicular assault charges for a crash in Orting last year that seriously injured herself, her boyfriend and another driver.

The collision happened July 27 at state Route 162 and Orville Road East.

Her boyfriend suffered a fractured femur and facial laceration. The other driver, who was returning to a campground where she was staying with her family, was treated for fractures to her tibia and fibula.

UPDATED: Veteran prone to ‘angry outbursts’ missing from Soldiers Home in Orting

UPDATE: Steele was found safe in Westport, according to Orting police.

INITIAL POST: A 65-year-old veteran known to have angry outbursts walked away from the Washington Soldiers Home in Orting Monday and has not returned, officials said.

Michael Gordon Steele was reported missing this morning.

Police said he left without his medication and was possibly headed to Gig Harbor or Westport. He could be disoriented and is prone to outbursts.

Steele is 6-feet and 180 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is known to wear a dark blue coat and blue jeans.

UPDATE: Orting teen airlifted to Harborview after crash on state Route 162

UPDATE, 12:02 p.m.: An 18-year-old from Orting was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a one-car crash early Sunday on state Route 162.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the young man was driving a 2003 Mazda eastbound on SR162 when the vehicle left the road and struck a power pole just before 1:30 a.m.

The State Patrol says the teen was wearing a seat belt, and investigators do not think drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

One person killed in two-alarm fire near Orting

One person died early Sunday in a mobile-home fire just south of Orting, the Orting Valley Fire District reports.

Emergency crews were called just before 1:30 a.m. to the intersection of 230th Avenue and Patterson Road.

Orting Valley firefighters “quickly requested a second alarm upon arrival when they found a heavily involved mobile home with reports of a person trapped,” said Lt. Steve Goodwin of the Orting Valley Fire District.

Fire crews responding to blaze in Orting

UPDATE: A small house and barn were destroyed in the 20800 block of Orville Road Friday just after 9 p.m. Friday, south of Orting.

The property owners were out and found the fire when they returned home.

About 30 firefighters were at the scene, and the blaze was under control at 9:52 p.m. Friday.

INITIAL POST: Crews from Orting Valley Fire & Rescue and East Pierce Fire & Rescue are on the scene of a structure fire in the 20600 block of Orville Rd East in Orting.

Reports of possible injuries, but further details unavailable right now.

Fire damages storage tank at Orting business

Fire damaged a wax storage tank at a cardboard plant in Orting late Thursday, firefighters reported.

The blaze broke out about 11:45 p.m. in the 10,000-gallon tank at Commencement Bay Corrugated, Orting Valley Fire & Rescue said. Workers at the plant use the wax to manufacture water-resistant cardboard.

Nearly 20 firefighters from three departments responded to the fire and brought it under control about 16 minutes after arriving, the agency said.

Damage is estimated at $3,000. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
