Two fallen firefighters to be honored today at annual memorial service

Two firefighters from the region will be honored today during the annual Washington State Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial Service.

The service, which is open to the public, will be held at 1 p.m. at the State Capitol Rotunda in Olympia. It will honor two firefighters who died in 2012 from work-related incidents.

Ernie Rideout, 57, joined the Kent Fire Department in 1978 and retired in 2010. He died June 6 from multiple myeloma, a cancer believed to have been contracted from his firefighting duties.

Central Pierce firefighters holding “Fill the Boot” fundraiser at McKenna intersection

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue will be collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at a McKenna intersection this weekend.

Firefighters will be at the intersection of state Route 702 and state Route 507 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The “Fill the Boot” event  is a regular fundraiser for MDA.

Memorial service to be held today for fallen Tacoma firefighter

A public memorial service will be held today for Tacoma firefighter Al Nejmeh, who died on-duty May 14 of a heart attack.

The service will be held at 1 p.m. at Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. It will also be broadcast live on TVTacoma.

Firefighters will gather about 11:30 a.m. on D Street for a procession to the Dome. Police will temporarily block off the area.

It will lead down D Street, around the LeMay Museum and into parking lot A.

Special Olympics torch to be carried through Pierce County today, Friday

Law enforcement officers will be running a torch for the Special Olympics through Pierce County today and Friday.

Four torches are carried from each end of the state and converge Friday afternoon at the Lakewood Police Department.

The official torch will then be run by Kennewick police detective Shirrell Zeitenheimer and athlete Michael I’ren to Joint-Base Lewis McChord, where 2,700 athletes will compete in five sports over the weekend.

The torch, which weighs about 10 pounds, will pass through Gig Harbor from 4 to 5 p.m. tonight via Burnham, Harborview and Soundview.

West Pierce firefighters collecting money for Muscular Dystrophy Association this weekend

West Pierce Fire & Rescue crews will be collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association this month with “Fill the Boot” events in Lakewood and University Place.

Firefighters will be at Lakewood Towne Center from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

They will also be passing the boot for donations at 27th Street and Bridgeport Way West in University Place at the same time May 10-11.

Over the last three years, fire officials said the department has raised more than $58,000 in Lakewood and University Place for the association.

Ceremony to honor Tacoma teen killed in Point Defiance Park crash to be held today

Local clergy will gather this morning for a spiritual ceremony in honor of a 15-year-old Tacoma boy killed April 12 in a car crash in Point Defiance Park.

The Moment of Blessing for Alex Ramirez will be held at 10 a.m. in the park, 5400 N. Pearl St., at the Y in the road at Ft. Nisqually cutoff road.

The public is welcome.

Alex was in the backseat of a vehicle that went off Five Mile Drive and crashed into a tree. The 17-year-old driver, who was allegedly drinking beer before the accident, has been charged with vehicular homicide.

Moment of Blessing to be held today for slain Tacoma boy

Local clergy will hold a spiritual ceremony this afternoon for a 2-year-old Tacoma boy allegedly killed by his mother’s boyfriend.

The Moment of Blessing for Chayson Colley will be held at noon outside the Commencement Terrace apartments, 29 St. Helens Ave. The public is invited.

Pierce County prosecutors said the boy had a high blood-alcohol level and head-to-toe injuries that killed him shortly after he was brought to a hospital Saturday. The boyfriend of Chayson’s mother has been charged with murder and rape in the case.

Ceremony to be held this morning for man fatally shot at Tacoma motel

Local clergy will gather this morning for a short spiritual ceremony in honor of Donald Phily, who was shot to death at a Tacoma motel early Friday.

Bamboo poles with red and purple ribbons will mark the gathering spot at the Morgan Motel, 7031 Pacific Ave. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m.

The public is welcome.

Tacoma police responded to the motel just after midnight Friday and found Phily shot to death in a room. Police said it was a robbery gone wrong.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the shooting.
