Teenager arrested for allegedly molesting girl at summer day camp in Fife

A 14-year-old boy training to be a counselor at a Fife summer day camp was arrested on suspicion of molesting a 9-year-old girl, police said today.

The boy was booked into Remann Hall Juvenile Detention Center Friday.

He was attending a junior counselor training program at Columbia Junior High. The victim was attending a day camp hosted by the Fife Parks & Recreation Department.

Commander Tim Floyd said the investigation is ongoing and declined to discuss details of the incident because the suspect and victim are juveniles.

Man convicted in Fife gun theft sentenced to life in prison

A man Fife police believe helped plan the theft of more than three dozen guns from a sporting goods store was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole under Washington’s “three strikes you’re out” law.

Soeun Sun, 30, said nothing before Superior Court Judge James Orlando handed down the sentence.

A Pierce County jury earlier this month convicted Sun of six felonies, including the strike offense of first-degree burglary for his role in the December 2011 break-in at the Sportco/Farwest Sports shop. Two thieves made off with 41 firearms. Detectives believe Sun later tried to sell

Crews respond to Fife house fire

Firefighters responded about 3:30 p.m. to the 6400 block of 4th Street Court Northeast for a house fire that displaced five people this afternoon, according to Tacoma Fire.

The cause of the blaze is still being determined.

No one was injured, and the occupants of the house weren’t home at the time of the fire.

A young German shepherd the owner said had been left in the back yard is still missing.

Further details were not immediately available.

UPDATE: Two men charged after father recognizes teenage daughter’s picture on Backpage.com

UPDATE as of 4:30 p.m. Both men pleaded not guilty, and the court set bail at $500,000 for each.

INITIAL POST: A father recognized his 15-year-old daughter’s photograph on Backpage.com Monday and called Fife police, who arrested two men suspected of pimping her and another teenage runaway.

Today, Pierce County prosecutors charged Samuel Miles-Johnson, 25, and Joshua Jones, 23, with promoting sexual abuse of a minor.

Both men are scheduled to enter pleas in court at 2:30 p.m.

Special Olympics torch to be carried through Pierce County today, Friday

Law enforcement officers will be running a torch for the Special Olympics through Pierce County today and Friday.

Four torches are carried from each end of the state and converge Friday afternoon at the Lakewood Police Department.

The official torch will then be run by Kennewick police detective Shirrell Zeitenheimer and athlete Michael I’ren to Joint-Base Lewis McChord, where 2,700 athletes will compete in five sports over the weekend.

The torch, which weighs about 10 pounds, will pass through Gig Harbor from 4 to 5 p.m. tonight via Burnham, Harborview and Soundview.

Fife man killed by SWAT member after holding son hostage identified

A Fife man fatally shot by a SWAT member Friday after holding his son hostage for about four hours has been identified as 30-year-old Leonard Thomas.

Police said Leonard was depressed and intoxicated during the incident, which took place at his home in the 200 block of 55th Avenue East.

He allegedly assaulted his mother, who came over at Leonard’s request to take care of his 4-year-old son, and refused to release the boy after the grandmother called 911.

Fife man who held 4-year-old son hostage fatally shot by police

A police SWAT member shot and killed a Fife man who held his 4-year-old son hostage for more than four hours Thursday night.

The man was reportedly drunk and depressed over a friend’s death and called his mother to come care for his child about 10:15 p.m.

When the grandmother tried to take the child with her, the man “became aggressive,” snatched his son from the vehicle and went back inside his home in the 200blockof 55th Avenue East.

Police: 62nd Avenue East closed in Fife as crews respond to suicide

UPDATE as of 11:50 a.m. Fife police said that about 9:55 a.m. a 911 caller reported a suspicious vehicle in the area, with an unresponsive male inside and a note taped to the window that said: “Do not open. Hydrogen Sulfide. Call 911.”

Emergency crews blocked off the area and entered the vehicle. They found the man was deceased, according to Fife police.

The potential area of exposure is minimal, officers said. 62nd Avenue East is still closed.
