Puyallup police waiting tables Saturday for Special Olympics

Puyallup police will be waiting tables at Red Robin Saturday to raise money for the Special Olympics of Washington.

Their goal is to raise at least $5,000.

Officers will join regular wait staff to serve patrons from noon to 8 p.m. at the restaurant, 3809 9th Street SW. Kids in attendance can meet McGruff the Crime Dog.

Anyone unable to make the event that wants to donate can call Officer Shaun Nestor at 253-377-5611 or send a check to SOWA c/o Puyallup Police Department, 311 West Pioneer Ave., Puyallup, WA 98371.

East Pierce firefighters finish Fill the Boot event today in Sumner

East Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters are wrapping up their “Fill the Boot” event today with one last collection in Sumner.

Off-duty firefighters will be standing near Valley Avenue and Main Street today taking donations from passersby for the Muscular Dystrophy Association until 6 p.m.

They have collected bills and coins from drivers in Bonney Lake, Lake Tapps and Edgewood in recent weeks.

Upcoming charity event to pit prosecutors against defense attorneys in dodgeball

A charity dodgeball match between Pierce County prosecutors and members of the local defense bar will take place Thursday.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at The People’s Center, 1602 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Tacoma. Entry is $10. Superior Court Judge John McCarthy will referee.

Prosecutors will play for Lawyers Helping Hungry Children. Defense attorneys will play for the Purdy Prison Pet Partnership.

Events planned Tuesday to honor fallen sheriff’s deputy

Two events will be held Tuesday to honor Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy Kent Mundell, who died a year ago after a shootout with a drunken man at a home outside Eatonville.

An 11 a.m. trail dedication will be held at Ashford County Park, 29801 state Route 706. The trail system of the in-progress park is being named after Mundell because the deputy was fond of the outdoors.

At 7 p.m., a candlelight vigil will be held in the fallen deputy’s honor at the sheriff’s South Hill precinct, 271 John Bananola Way East.

Benefit concert Sunday for family of Tacoma couple killed in I-90 crash

Friends and family of a Tacoma couple killed in a June crash on Interstate 90 will host a benefit concert and silent auction this weekend to raise money for their 4-year-old son and other expenses.

Sean Mitchell, 29, and his 26-year-old wife Lindsey were headed home with their son and two friends June 29 after a weekend camping trip in Eastern Washington. Washington State Patrol troopers have said they believe Sean Mitchell fell asleep at the wheel about 6:45 a.m. as he headed west on I-90. His car left the road and struck a guardrail and cement bridge railing

Children become police chiefs and sheriffs for a day

Children suffering from life-threatening or chronic illness will be treated to breakfast, gift baskets, demonstrations and the honor of commanding a police force for a day today.

They’ll take part in the annual Chief for a Day celebration at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission in Burien. The event starts this morning with breakfast at Qwest Field. The children and their families will then be transported by police escort to the Burien facility.

Tacoma neighbors to clean up their junk Saturday

Several neighborhoods in Tacoma will be hosting cleanup parties Saturday to encourage residents to dump their junk.

The neighborhoods sponsoring the cleanups are:

* Jennie Reed and Lincoln West (Interstate 5 to South Thompson Avenue between I-5 and South 38th Street).

* Whitman (South 38th Street to South43rd Street between South Sheridan and Yakima avenues).

* Whitman, Mann, Stewart, Spring Hill and Four Star (South 43rd to South 56th streets between South Sheridan Avenue and the railroad tracks west of East McKinley Avenue).
