Enumclaw nurse accused of mentally abusing elderly patients

The state has charged a nurse with unprofessional conduct for allegedly mentally abusing elderly clients and locking them alone in their rooms, according to the Department of Health.

Mary Anna Vanwieringen worked at an Enumclaw facility during the time of the alleged abuse, which ranged from March 2003 to November 2010.

Documents claim Vanwieringen mentally abused one client by yelling and threatening to punish him with isolation and ridiculed another man’s “personal preferences” and isolated him in his room.

Vanwieringen has not yet responded to the charges.


Buckley man charged with vehicular homicide after hitting teen walking with girlfriend in Enumclaw on Halloween

A 20-year-old Buckley man has been charged with vehicular homicide for allegedly using marijuana and oxycodone before driving and hitting a 16-year-old boy who was walking on the shoulder of state Route 410 in Enumclaw on Halloween night.

Cody Money was arrested Wednesday, and his bail was set at $50,000. His arraignment is scheduled for March 21.

According to charging papers:

Money was driving a silver 2005 Nissan Titan pickup that hit 16-year-old Justin Relethford about 8 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2012.

Relethford died at the scene from his injuries. His 15-year-old girlfriend, whose hand he was holding just before the crash,

Extra DUI patrols in Pierce, King counties this weekend

Additional law enforcement officers will patrol for drunken drivers this weekend in Pierce and King counties as people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Representatives from the state Liquor Control Board will also be visiting bars to talk to employees about responsible service. Officers will hand out “Click 2 Ride” tickets with phone numbers for local taxi companies.

Participating agencies include Auburn, Bonney Lake, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Kent, Lakewood, Milton, Puyallup, Steilacoom, Sumner, Tacoma and University Place police, as well as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the Washington State Patrol.


Malnourished horses, cats and goat seized from Enumclaw property

More than two dozen malnourished horses, cats and a goat were seized this week from a farm near Enumclaw.

King County Animal Control Services received a tip about emaciated horses being kept on acreage near 236th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 416th Street.

They obtained a search warrant Wednesday night and took 16 horses, a cat and a goat. After noticing other horses that looked underweight, officers brought a second search warrant to the farm Thursday and seized another six horses.

“It was obvious some of them were malnourished,” King County spokesman Cameron Satterfield said, adding that some of the animals’

State Patrol looking for witnesses to fatal Enumclaw crash Halloween night

The State Patrol is looking for witnesses to a fatal car-pedestrian crash that happened Halloween night in Enumclaw on westbound state Route 410.

Justin Relethford, 16 of Enumclaw, died after he was hit by a pickup about 8 p.m. near milepost 23 as he was walking on the right shoulder, according to the State Patrol.

A 16-year-old Enumclaw girl who was walking with Relethford did not report any injuries.

The 20-year-old from Buckley who was driving the pickup is being investigated for vehicular homicide, the State Patrol said.

Enumclaw man charged with vehicular homicide

A 22-year-old Enumclaw man has been charged with a fatal crash that killed one of his passengers and severely injured the other.

Kyle Joseph Podolak faces one count of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault in connection with the April 22 crash in Orting. He is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 17.

Killed in the collision was Brandon Duprie, 21, of Enumclaw. The other passenger suffered a spinal fracture and now has a metal plate and screws in his back.

Enumclaw business owner pleads guilty to tax fraud

The owner of an Enumclaw roofing company pleaded guilty today to partially paying his employees in cash to avoid $1 million in payroll taxes, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Bruce Sprague, 52, faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 8. His plea deal requires him to pay $1.2 million in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

Prosecutors said Sprague, who owns Bruce’s Roofing, paid his employees a portion of their wages in cash from 2005-2008. That means he did not have to pay payroll taxes on the wages paid in cash and he did

Enumclaw woman charged with beating boy for not being potty trained

An Enumclaw woman has been charged in connection with beating her boyfriend’s 3-year-old son because he is not potty trained.

Chasity Dufour faces a single count of second-degree child assault. She is set to be arraigned July 19.

King County prosecutors allege Dufour abused to boy from April 30 to May 29, when he was brought to the hospital with severe injuries.

Dufour claimed the boy was playing on a bed when he fell and landed on a metal tool box. Investigators believe he was beaten when he did not make it to a toilet in time.
