Emphasis patrols gearing up in Pierce County for holidays

A six-week emphasis patrol that will extend through the holidays kicks off Wednesday in Pierce County, and authorities are warning drivers not to drink and drive.

This will be the first Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over patrol, which will put additional law enforcement officers on the road to make DUI arrests. It includes a focused patrol on Black Friday in East Pierce County.

Participating agencies include Sumner, Bonney Lake, Puyallup, Tacoma, Fife, University Place, Lakewood, Gig Harbor, Steilacoom, Fircrest and Dupont police, along with the Washington State Patrol and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

DUI patrols scheduled in Tacoma on Saturday

More than 30 law enforcement officers will patrol Tacoma bars Saturday in hopes of reducing the number of drunken driving incidents.

Pierce County’s Target Zero team will focus on establishments in North Tacoma and 6th Avenue starting at 9 p.m.

Those arrested on suspicion of DUI will be brought to a 36-foot motor home to be tested for alcohol and placed in a holding cell.

253 Pierce County drivers arrested during DUI emphasis patrol

During a two-week enforcement campaign aimed at impaired drivers, Pierce County law enforcement arrested 254 people.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission today released the results of the Drive Hammered, Get Nailed patrols that took place from Aug. 17 to Sept. 3.

This year’s numbers were down from last year, when 287 drivers were arrested in Pierce County on suspicion of DUI during the same emphasis patrol.

More than 1,600 drivers were arrested statewide, according to the commission.

Law enforcement to canvass 6th Avenue bars to warn of DUI patrols

Law enforcement and volunteers will be canvassing bars on Tacoma’s 6th Avenue Saturday to warn people about the ongoing DUI patrols in Pierce County.

Fourteen local agencies are participating in the Drive Hammered, Get Nailed campaign, which lasts through Sept. 3. It focuses on taking drunken drivers off the roads.

On Saturday, 25 law enforcement officers are pairing with members of the community to notify patrons of 6th Avenue bars about the enforcement period and suggest ways to get home safely.

DUI enforcement campaign kicks off today in Pierce County

An enforcement campaign targeting drunken drivers kicks off in Pierce County today.

The Drive Hammered, Get Nailed campaign will last until Sept. 3 and includes 14 law enforcement agencies.

Last year in Pierce County, patrol officers arrested 287 on suspicion of driving under the influence during the same enforcement period. Officials said 5,328 people were charged with DUIs last year in the county.

The following agencies are participating: Bonney Lake, DuPont, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Milton, Puyallup, Steilacoom, Sumner, Tacoma and University Place police departments, as well as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the Washington State Patrol.

Statewide DUI crackdown begins this weekend

Law enforcement across the state will ramp up DUI patrols starting this weekend, as part of a roughly two-week campaign against impaired driving.

Teams will also visit bars to hand out cards that can be scanned with with smartphones to call a taxi, and will give bar workers taxi chips to help members of the military get home.

More than 25 agencies will participate, including Pierce County law enforcement.

1,680 ticketed during Click It or Ticket campaign in three counties

More than 2,100 drivers were pulled over in Pierce, King and Snohomish counties during the 10th annual Click It or Ticket program, which ran from May 21 to June 3.

During the campaign, 172 law enforcement officers from 31 agencies stopped drivers and passengers who were not wearing their seat belts.

About 1,680 tickets were written, including 840 seat belt violations, 358 cell phone violations and 143 speeding infractions. Officers also arrested 25 people with warrants, nine people for driving under the influence and 72 people who were behind the wheel with suspended or revoked licenses.

187 drivers arrested in Pierce, King, Snohomish counties over Cinco de Mayo weekend

Nearly 200 drunken drivers were arrested in Pierce, King and Snohomish counties over Cinco de Mayo weekend, the Tacoma-Pierce County DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force announced today.

More than 70 law enforcement officers from 33 agencies participated in Target Zero patrols Friday and Saturday nights and arrested 187 people. They targeted streets where alcohol-related accidents have occurred in recent years in Tacoma, Federal Way, Kent, Auburn, Renton, Seattle, Bellevue, Everett, Lynnwood and Marysville.
