Suspected car thief deputies say faked paralysis to escape pleads not guilty

A suspected car thief deputies said faked paralysis to escape custody pleaded not guilty recently.

Justin Wetrich, 30 of Buckley, faces charges of attempting to elude police, first-degree possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, among other counts.

He was arraigned and pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Deputies said Wetrich crashed a stolen truck in Parkland in late May while attempting to flee law enforcement.

He was taken to the hospital after the wreck, and said he was paralyzed, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Doctors believed him, and he later ran away, deputies said.

Pierce County deputies catch up with man who faked paralysis to escape custody

Pierce County authorities have captured a suspected car thief who faked paralysis to escape custody.

Justin Wetrich, 30, was booked into the Pierce County Jail on Wednesday. The circumstances surrounding his arrest were not immediately reported.

Wetrich went on the lam in late May after crashing what deputies said was a stolen truck in Parkland while allegedly attempting to flee law enforcement.

Wetrich was Injured in the wreck, and deputies took him to a local hospital and left him there for treatment. Wetrich allegedly complained he was paralyzed, and doctors believed him, authorities said.

Police: Boy, 12, hurt after 13-year-old driver wrecks stolen car during Tacoma crime spree

A 12-year-old boy suffered a serious head injury this week after his 13-year-old buddy wrecked a stolen car following a Tacoma crime spree, police said.

“This was a bad deal all around,” police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The action began at the University of Puget Sound about 12:05 a.m. Tuesday when a security guard saw three people acting suspiciously near a Nissan Xterra, Cool said. The trio climbed into the car as the guard approached and drove off, she said. The guard found broken glass where the Xterra had been parked, realized it had just been stolen and called police.

Warrant issued for Graham man accused of tampering with a witness

A Graham man tried to tell a witness what to say in hopes of escaping five counts of unlawful possession of stolen property, Pierce County prosecutors said.

Now, 37-year-old Ian Schmidt faces an additional count for tampering with a witness. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Schmidt posted $50,000 bail in mid-May and was ordered not to have contact with any witnesses in his case.

Schmidt was charged with unlawful possession of stolen property after deputies found five stolen vehicles he was allegedly storing at neighbors’ homes. The neighbors told deputies they allowed Schmidt

Auburn man pleads not guilty in police chase, fatal crash

A 22-year-old Auburn man has pleaded not guilty to charges he caused a car wreck that killed his passenger in February.

Brian Sicade was charged last month with second-degree murder, vehicular homicide, unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude police and third-degree driving with a suspended license.

Sicade was arraigned Monday in Pierce County Superior Court.

State troopers believe Sicade was at the wheel of a stolen Chevrolet Monte Carlo that crashed Feb. 4 as the driver fled police on Interstate 5 near the Port of Tacoma Road. His passenger, 45-year-old Victor Wilson, died.

Puyallup officers, police dog injured in scuffle with suspected car thief

Three Puyallup police officers and a police dog were injured last week while trying to arrest a suspected car thief.

The incident unfolded the night of May 15 after a car stolen from Seattle was abandoned in a bank parking lot at South Meridian and 14th Street SW.

Witnesses saw a woman flee the vehicle, which had just been involved in a hit-and-run collision in South Hill.

Arriving officers spotted the woman on the balcony of a nearby motel and went to question her. While interviewing the woman, a man jumped out at officers, sprayed one

Police: Man stole car from Lakewood dealership while owner had the trunk open

Police say a man drove off the lot of a Lakewood dealership with a used car Saturday, in such a hurry that he left the trunk open.

He didn’t keep it, though, officers said.

Or rather, police didn’t let him, since he allegedly stole the vehicle out from under the owner’s nose.

The owner parked his car at the dealership about 2:45 p.m. at 11503 Pacific Highway Southwest and left his keys on the dash board as he walked to the back of the car and opened the hatchback trunk to get his belongings from the car.

Prosecutors charge another person allegedly tied to auto theft ring

Pierce County prosecutors have charged another person in connection with an undercover operation that took down nearly two dozen alleged car thieves.

Kassandra Chambers, 21, is charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit motor vehicle theft and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle. She has not been arrested of arraigned.

Chambers and two others are accused of stealing a Ford Explorer, Kia Sorrento and Chevy Trail Blazer from an automobile repair shop in Tacoma Jan. 22. The owner was in his office, glanced at surveillance cameras and saw three people drive away in customer vehicles.
