UPDATED: Crews fighting multiple fires off SR 410, delays expected

UPDATE as of 4 :22 p.m. The fires are extinguished, East Pierce says.

INITIAL POST: East Pierce Fire & Rescue was called this afternoon to a small outside fire in the 26200 block of state Route 410, in unincorporated Pierce County. The first unit on scene reports four large fires in the area, according to East Pierce.

The largest is 30 feet away from trailers and campers at Uncle Johns RV park, East Pierce officials say.

Police have been asked to help control traffic in the area.

Delays are expected between Buckley and Bonney Lake, according to East Pierce.

Buckley City Councilman pleads guilty to child rape, will have to register as sex offender

Buckley City Councilman Randy Reed this morning pleaded guilty to first-degree child rape and indecent liberties and was jailed pending sentencing.

Pierce County prosecutors had accused Reed, 55,  of sexually abusing the 7-year-old daughter of a woman he knows.

Reed will be sentenced Oct. 26.

Deputy prosecutor Tim Lewis said Reed qualifies for a special sentencing alternative because he is a first-time offender. As such, Lewis said he would recommend a sentence of 10 years, 11 months to life in prison with all but 12 months of that minimum sentence suspended. Reed would serve that year in the Pierce County

Crews trying to rescue driver of car that fell into ravine south of Buckley

UPDATE as of 7:21 p.m. :

The driver was rescued and taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to East Pierce Fire & Rescue.

The man tried to turn his car around by the bridge about 1 p.m., when the vehicle went over the embankment, East Pierce officials said.

He tried to climb out, lost his footing, and fell about 100 to 150 feet into the ravine, toward the Carbon River.

A pair of off-duty officers called 911 after they saw the car about 4 p.m. and heard the man yelling for help.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating

Man charged with arson, assault in Buckley rampage

A 52-year-old man is accused of lighting a Buckley woman’s garage on fire and chasing her with a baseball bat.

Lonnie Leroy Tate pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two counts of second-degree arson, second-degree assault and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies were called Saturday to the victim’s house in the 6800 block of 245th Avenue East after someone called to report Tate was “on a rampage.”

Son of Buckley councilman pleads guilty to tampering with a witness in father’s child-rape case

The son of a Buckley city councilman has pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness in the first-degree child rape case against his father.

Travis Reed, 31, entered the plea July 19. Pierce County Superior Court Judge John McCarthy sentenced him to six months of community custody and ordered him not to have contact with the victim.

Reed acknowledged sending a text message to the victim’s mother last year offering to pay $200 a month until the girl turned 18 if she would drop charges against his father, Randy Reed.

The woman reported him to Buckley police.

Sex offender pleads not guilty in 1995 rape of Buckley girl

A convicted sex offender already serving life in prison without the possibility of parole pleaded not guilty Thursday to raping a Buckley girl in 1995.

Superior Court Commissioner Meagan Foley ordered Donald Schneider, 53, held without bail pending his trial.

Pierce County prosecutors contend forensics technicians earlier this year matched DNA evidence collected in the 1995 rape to Schneider. He was brought back from the state penitentiary in Walla Walla to answer the newest charges against him.

Schneider allegedly snatched the fourth-grade special education student from a bus stop then raped her, court records show.

Sex offender to be arraigned for 1995 rape of Buckley girl

A convicted sex offender is expected to be arraigned Thursday on charges that he sexually assaulted a little girl in 1995 and left her in a wooded area in Buckley.

Pierce County prosecutors have charged Donald Schneider, 53, with first-degree rape of a child and first-degree rape.

He is being held at the Pierce County Jail. Schneider was recently transferred from Walla Walla Prison, where he was serving a life sentence without parole for a 2007 conviction for two counts of first-degree rape and one count of unlawful imprisonment.
