Suspect detained in homicide near Greenwater

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting death of a man overnight on a forest road near Greenwater.

A man who called 911 told deputies that the other man, who was with him in a car, had pulled a knife, said the sheriff’s office. The man who reported the death said he shot the man in self-defense.

The two King County men, both with criminal histories, had been partying together earlier Tuesday night.

The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m.

The shooter is being detained for questioning, the sheriff’s office said.

Mom whose car and child were stolen left keys in ignition

Pierce County detectives suspect a thief who stole a car with a child inside near a Puyallup-area day care Tuesday morning may have been lurking outside hoping parents would leave their cars unattended while dropping off their children.

The thief abandoned the 2010 Ford Focus with a 16-month-old child inside on a side street about a dozen blocks from the child care center. The child was unharmed.

Sheriff’s deputies and police from several local jurisdictions had cast a large dragnet at mid-morning Tuesday after they were alerted about the theft. They set up road blocks and cordoned off the neighborhood

Pierce County settles lawsuit over man’s suicide in jail

Pierce County has agreed to pay $100,000 to settle a federal lawsuit brought by the parents of a man who committed suicide in the jail.

The county admitted no fault in reaching the settlement with Ralph Close and Laura Larson, according to documents filed this week in U.S. District Court.

Close and Larson sued in January, claiming the county should have done more to supervise the incarceration of their son, James Robert Close.

The 30-year-old Sequim resident died June 16, 2006, shortly after being booked into the jail for investigation of bank robbery.
