Thunderstorms possible this afternoon

Thunderstorms may be on tap this afternoon, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures may reach 85 degrees today, making it the hottest day of the week. Friday and Saturday will be almost as warm with a high of 84.

However, there is a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Winds 6 to 11 miles per hour are also expected. Tonight’s high will be 58.

Meteorologist Cliff Mass said the thunderstorms will be “high-based, meaning that the rain will be falling for great distances through dry air.  Thus, only limited precipitation may reach the ground.  Lightning might hit relatively dry ground…with the clear threat of fire initiation.”
