Nineteen people were displaced this morning after an intense fire heavily damaged four units of an apartment complex in Lakewood, officials said.

The fire was reported shortly after 4 a.m. at 7523 Dean Ave. West.

Ranger Marcus Taylor, a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier who just back from Afghanistan, told KOMO he heard kids screaming and saw flames at a nearby apartment building.

He rushed over and was told someone was still on the top floor of the two-story building. Taylor says he heard rustling and kicked in a sliding glass door. He told residents to come to the sound of his voice.

When West Pierce firefighters arrived, the complex was fully involved. They put out the fire around 5:10 a.m.

Fifteen adults and four children lost their homes in the blaze. One woman was treated and released for smoke inhalation. Taylor injured his foot.

There is an estimated $400,000 in damages, West Pierce spokeswoman Hallie McCurdy said. Two units are a complete loss and two others are heavily damaged.

A cause has not been determined.
