Shooting in Lakewood – detectives hunt ex-boyfriend

The fight pitted an old boyfriend against a new one. It started over money and food stamps, and it ended with a woman shot in the abdomen.

Lakewood Police are still investigating the incident, first reported at about 7:20 p.m. Thursday. The call drew multiple officers to an apartment complex in the 13000 block of Lincoln Avenue Southwest.

According to police spokesman Chris Lawler, the woman was in her apartment with her boyfriend when her ex-boyfriend showed up with another friend in tow. The ex had just gotten out of prison, Lawler said.

“A big argument breaks out over money and food stamps that the guy thought he was owed,” Lawler said.

The ex-boyfriend decided to leave, but fired two gunshots before he left. The first hit a parked car. The second shattered the sliding-glass door of the apartment and hit the woman in the abdomen, Lawler said.

When police arrived, the woman was lying in the parking lot, but she was conscious and coherent. She was transported to a local hospital, but her wounds were not considered life-threatening, Lawler said.

Lawler did not identify the gunman or his friend – he said police are still searching for them.
