Tacoma police said they found the man who crashed his car in Point Defiance Park Monday and fled, leaving behind his seriously injured passenger.

The accident was reported about 7 a.m. on Five Mile Drive near Camp 6. Passersby found a semi-conscious male beside a smashed Honda Civic and called 911.

The passenger gave officers confusing information but did tell them there was someone else in the car. That piece of information led to a day-long search in nearby woods for the second person that included a county airplane and search-and-rescue dogs.

Police said the driver, 24, was not injured and fled the scene. Officers later questioned him but did not arrest him.

The case is being forwarded to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office.

“Speed was a factor” in the crash, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

It appears the man was speeding and lost control around a curve, hitting two trees before coming to a stop.
