Sound Inpatient Physicians of Tacoma has agreed to pay a $14 million penalty to settle claims it overbilled Medicare and other health-care programs, federal authorities said Wednesday.
Federal investigators contended the firm knowingly submitted inflated claims from 2004 to 2012, the U.S. Justice department reported.
The fraud came to the government’s attention after a former employee of the firm filed a whistle-blower complaint. That man, Craig Thomas, will receive more than $2 million of the settlement money.
The firm provides more about 700 doctors at hospitals in 22 states.
