Police believe a driver was using his cell phone when he crashed his car into a wooden power pole along South Tacoma Way on Wednesday.
Crews responded about 2 p.m. to the wreck in the 2200 block of South Tacoma Way, and took two of the three occupants of the car to the hospital, Tacoma fire Battalion Chief Jim Zuluaga said. The third occupant’s injuries were not life-threatening, Zuluaga said.
A female passenger was in critical condition at Tacoma General Hospital. It wasn’t clear whether the driver was hospitalized.
The crash ripped the car apart, which meant crews didn’t need to use special equipment to remove the patients from the vehicle, Zuluaga said.
The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license, and released with a citation and ticket for negligent driving and not having insurance, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.
“We think he was talking or texting with his phone when he drove off the roadway,” police Lt. Jerry Lerum said.
