A 21-year-old man riding a longboard on the trail adjacent to the Chambers Bay golf course Saturday died after losing control and hitting a tree, Pierce County sheriff’s deputies reported.

Tyler Johnson was not wearing a helmet when he crashed on a section of trail that  snakes through a series of switchbacks on the northwest side of the course, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

A longboard is a longer version of skateboard.

The crash occurred about 3:15 p.m. Johnson died later at an area hospital, Troyer said.
