One resident was hospitalized and two buildings were extensively damaged Saturday in two early morning fires in Tacoma.

Firefighters responded to the first fire in an apartment building at 3701 South Orchard St. at 6:19 a.m. Firefighters were called to the second blaze, this one at 1432 E. 29th St.,  22 minutes later.

The Tacoma Fire Departments said the apartment fire on Orchard apparently originated from an unattended candle that ignited nearby curtains.  When fire crews arrived, no one was in the apartment. That apartment was part of a 12-unit building. Firefighters evacuated residents of nearby units and then extinguished the blaze in the third-floor apartment.

The Red Cross was called to provide temporary housing for residents of nearby units.  Fire investigators estimated damage of $36,000 to the apartment and its contents.

The second blaze was discovered by a Tacoma firefighter on his way to the Sound-to-Narrows race near Point Defiance Park.  When firefighters arrived, they transported one injured person to a Tacoma-area hospital and treated another at the scene.

The home on East 29th Street suffered about $65,000 damage. Fire officials said they found no working fire or smoke detectors in the home.

The Red Cross said it was providing temporary shelter for six adults and one child displaced from the home by the fire.
