A police SWAT member shot and killed a Fife man who held his 4-year-old son hostage for more than four hours Thursday night.

The man was reportedly drunk and depressed over a friend’s death and called his mother to come care for his child about 10:15 p.m.

When the grandmother tried to take the child with her, the man “became aggressive,” snatched his son from the vehicle and went back inside his home in the 200blockof 55th Avenue East.

The grandmother, who was concerned about the boy’s well-being, followed them. Police said the man grabbed his mother’s arm, hit her and prevented her from calling 911.

Neighbors called for help after hearing the woman call for help as she ran down the street.

Negotiators spoke with the man on the phone but he refused to release his son, telling police he was armed with a pistol.

During the standoff, police said the man paced upstairs, used the child as a shield and once held him out an open window.

A SWAT team responded to the home and eventually convinced the man to hand his son over.

Around 2:45 a.m., the man brought his son to the front porch but then moved to take him back inside. A SWAT member shot the man, who later died at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The child was not injured.

Fife police said they have responded several times to the man’s house for “violent crimes” and that he is flagged in a law enforcement database as being armed and dangerous.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet identified the man.
