Lakewood police have arrested a couple in connection to an assault at a poolroom last week that killed a 47-year-old Woodinville man.
The incident happened Wednesday at the Last Call bar in the 7300 block of Lakewood Drive.
Police said the victim accidentally bumped into a man playing pool nearby. The man then punched the victim so hard he fell and struck his head on the floor.
The victim died at an area hospital Friday. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Anthony Vasquez.
The man who punched him fled the bar before police arrived. Officers were able to identify the man after determining he was a regular at the poolroom but hadn’t been able to locate him.
Early this morning, police arrested the man, 31, and his girlfriend, 33, at a Puyallup home. He was booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of second-degree manslaughter. The girlfriend is being held on suspicion of second-degree manslaughter and rendering criminal assistance.
Lakewood police Lt. Chris Lawler said the girlfriend drove the suspect from the bar and helped hide him from police. He also noted that the man was surprised when he discovered the victim died as a result of the punch.
“He was shocked,” Lawler said, adding that both the man and his girlfriend refused to speak with police.
Deputy prosecutor Phil Sorensen said the pair is expected to be charged and arraigned Tuesday.
