Pierce County patrols start today for cell phone, seat belt violations

Additional law enforcement officers will patrol Pierce County roads starting today in search of drivers texting or talking on their cell phones.

The emphasis patrol will last until June 2.

Authorities are also looking for drivers who are not properly seat belted in.

During a similar enforcement period last year, law enforcement officers issued 1,059 cell phone tickets and 3,171 seat belt tickets statewide.

Participating agencies include Fircrest, Lakewood, Orting, Puyallup, Sumner and Tacoma police, as well as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the Washington State Patrol.
