A man drove off Yakima Avenue, down an embankment and landed on Interstate 5 just before 4 p.m. while trying to avoid officers after a hit-and-run accident, Tacoma police spokeswoman Loretta Cool and the Washington State Patrol said.

He is in custody and is being taken to St. Joseph Hospital for a checkup, but doesn’t appear to be injured, Cool said.

No one  was injured in the crash or the hit-and-run, which happened in an intersection in the 1200 block of South Altheimer Street, Cool said.

It appears the man lost control of the car, which lost its back right wheel in the initial accident, and drove through the fencing and down onto the freeway, Cool said.

The man drove evasively away from the scene at about 35 miles per hour, Cool said.

The Washington State Patrol said about 4:15 p.m. that two lanes of I-5 were blocked as crews responded.
