Engineer Robert “Bob” Schmidt’s death is considered to be in the line of duty because his cancer was caused by the job, according to Capt. Kyle Ohashi. Schmidt battled brain cancer for 10 months.
He leaves behind his wife, Kim, and two sons, Erik and Alex.
Schmidt joined the department in September 1989 and spent most of his career at station 71.
“We have lost a great guy who placed his family as his number one priority,” Fire Chief Jim Schneider said. “He could light up a room with his smile and his enthusiasm for everything and everyone he believed in.”
Schmidt is the first line-of-duty death in Washington this year.
