UPDATE as of 7 p.m. The backpack contained clothing and personal items, and the scene is safe, Cool said.

UPDATE as of 6:46 p.m. A backpack was found inside a medical refrigerator by the back door of the building, Cool said. Bomb experts hit the backpack with a water cannon multiple times to try to disrupt the contents and see inside, she said. “It allows us to actually see what’s in the container,” without triggering a potential explosive, Cool said.

After using the cannon, experts are still investigating the contents from a distance, Cool said.

INITIAL POST: Tacoma police bomb experts are investigating a package that appears to be a backpack and refrigerator outside the Planned Parenthood clinic at 813 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, according to police spokeswoman Loretta Cool.

“Instead of taking chances, obviously with what’s going on in today’s world, we are conducting an EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) call out,” Cool said. “They’re inspecting it, they might x-ray it.”

She said she believed officers had evacuated everyone from the building.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
